Marlborough’s guide to the Melling Chase (Aintree, 3.30pm)

A fascinating renewal, with several top-class chasers clashing, bringing together some intriguing formlines in what should be a hard-fought contest. Jonbon would be a strong fancy in this race, especially with the step up in trip sure to be in his favour, but his wellbeing and indeed his stable’s wellbeing temper enthusiasm somewhat to his chances. Pic D’Orhy looks the solid pick as such a consistent sort but the form and class pick coming into this clearly looks to be PROTEKTORAT, whose Aintree record is to be respected and comes forward off the back of an impressive performance in the Ryanair at Cheltenham; he can take all the beating.

Conflated: Very good horse on his day, gave a bold showing to finish 3rd in the Ryanair latest; fancied to go well in first-time cheekpieces here.

Easy Game: Grade 2 winner latest but this looks a sizeable step up in class nevertheless. Respected for powerful connections but could get found out in this company.

Envoi Allen: Has been a high-class horse for some time now, seemingly as good as ever when 2nd in the Ryanair last month. Likes this distance; can go close again.

Jonbon: Would have been a leading fancy for the Champion Chase but for his withdrawal due to stable wellbeing. Fancied to relish this trip; hard to weigh up for all that he is the clear form pick.

Minella Drama: Useful chaser but his form of late leaves him considerably short of several of his rivals here. Will likely need a career-best to make the placings; best watched.

Pic D’Orhy: Admirably consistent, high-class chaser who loves this intermediate distance. Twice a Grade 1 winner and fancied to go very close to gaining a 3rd.

Protektorat: Highly tried at staying distances prior to appreciating the drop back in trip to score in last month’s Ryanair. Loves Aintree and taken to go very close.
