Maine field hockey: Ava Brent's three goals lead York past Cape Elizabeth in Class B South

YORK, Maine - The York High School field hockey team was motivated it would not lose to Cape Elizabeth for a third time in six weeks on Wednesday in the first round of the Class B South tournament.

After two regular-season losses to the Capers, including last week, the fourth-seeded Wildcats defeated No. 5 Cape Elizabeth when it mattered the most, 4-1.

York head coach Barb Marois said the biggest adjustment was simply that the Wildcats played their game.

"We've had moments playing our game, but not consistently, " York head coach Barb Marois said. "Today was a much more consistent performance across the board from the top down."

"(The win) felt awesome," said York's Ava Brent, who scored three goals in the win. "We knew (Cape Elizabeth) was a tough team. We were all extremely motivated to win. Everyone wanted to keep the season going."

York (8-5-1) will face top-seed Yarmouth in Saturday's semifinal. Yarmouth advanced with a 6-0 win over No. 8 Wells. York and Yarmouth played to a 1-1 tie in the regular season.

Coite, assisted by Nya Avery and Maddie Fitzgerald, opened the scoring 3 minutes into the game.

"That was a confidence boost that we really needed, it got us pretty pumped up," Coite said of her goal. "That helped us push through and keep the momentum going."

With 2:34 left in the first quarter, Cape's Clio Cook-Sharp scored the equalizer. Then, the game turned into the Ava Brent scoring show.

Brent's first leg of her hat trick occurred in the second quarter off an assist from Coite to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. Brent scored again with 46 seconds left in the half, as the Wildcats took a 3-1 lead into intermission. Brent scored on a penalty stroke with 8:27 left.

York goalie Natalie Dickson had two saves.
