Magic waive G Mack to shed salary

The Orlando Magic waived guard Shelvin Mack on Monday, the deadline day for his $6 million salary for next season to be guaranteed.

With the move, only $1 million counts toward the Magic cap, while Mack will now become a free agent.

A second-round pick by the Washington Wizards in 2011, Mack has played for five franchises in his seven-year career.

Last season, his first with the Magic, the 28-year-old averaged 6.9 points, 3.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game -- all above his career averages. He started three games and played in 69, the second-most of his career (he played in 73 games with Atlanta in 2013-14).

The Magic are seeking cap space as forward Aaron Gordon is set to become a restricted free agent. Gordon has previously spoken of his desire for a max contract (five years, $148 million), and while such a figure seems unlikely, he is expected to command a deal in the neighborhood of four years and $100 million.
