Mac McClung reacts to joining Sixers, responds to Kevin Durant’s comments

Before the Philadelphia 76ers headed off into the All-Star break, they brought in Mac McClung from the G League on a two-way deal. McClung was playing for the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, and he will be looking to try and make an impact with the Sixers.

In 18 regular season games for the Blue Coats, McClung averaged 19.1 points on 58% shooting and 4.8 assists per game. He will now be looking to take that production and have it translate to the NBA game.

McClung will also be in the dunk contest at All-Star weekend in Utah. He earned that call while in the G League when he got the call for the slam dunk contest.

He sat down with The Athletic and The Stadium’s Shams Charania and he was asked about the dunk contest, joining the Sixers on a two-way deal, and the comments Kevin Durant made about McClung being in the dunk contest.

For context, here is what Durant said about McClung

Durant was discussing the dunk contest on “The Etcs with KD” and he had a wish to have more stars in the contest. He was shocked to see McClung in there who was in the G League at the time of the comments.

Durant was listing out the participants and then said this about McClung:

Mac McClung, which is crazy that they doing that out the G League. No shade, but what’re we doing? And Mac is an outstanding athlete, but what’re we doing?

McClung's response to Durant

“As I get older, the positive and the negative, they affect me either way, I think. I always lead with love. I think be more curious than judgmental. Kevin Durant, I’m not gonna feel any way because he said that. I always got love for people who inspire me. It’s no hate from my angle. Sometimes, hate’s gonna go your way, but I’m just gonna be positive and make the most of it.”

McClung on joining the Sixers on the two-way deal and what comes next

“Really just to stay the course. I feel like if you let it be a roller coaster, it will be so I know who I am and I’m excited for every opportunity I get and I’m gonna try to make the most of it. It’s definitely been an eventful week planning all the dunks and also being called up. It’s funny how things really happen when you least expect it, but it’s all been a blessing.”

On joining the dunk contest

“They had contacted my agent and told me. I was super thrilled to be a part of it. It’s something I love. I knew there would be some backlash even though I didn’t choose myself to be in there, but I try to make the most of it and be the best I can.”
