Loons sign Swedish defender Victor Eriksson; Emanuel Reynoso joins MNUFC in Arizona

Minnesota United has brought in the center back depth the club needs for the 2024 season.

MNUFC said Thursday it has signed 6-foot-4 Swedish defender Victor Eriksson to a three-year contract though 2026, with a club option for 2027.

The acquisition of Eriksson did not require a transfer fee because the 23-year-old was out of contract with his club in Sweden, a source told the Pioneer Press.

Eriksson will join the Loons once he acquires his immigration paperwork. He will occupy an international roster spot at MNUFC.

The Loons have had a void on the roster behind starters Micky Tapias and Michael Boxall.

Eriksson has been been with IFK Varnamo in Sweden’s top flight, Allsvarskan, for the past two seasons, playing at least 2,500 minutes in each campaign. He was a part of his hometown club as it climbed from Sweden’s third division in 2020 to the second division in 2021 and to the top tier in 2022.

Eriksson made his debut for Sweden’s men’s national team against Finland in January 2023.

Reynoso arrives

Loons star midfielder Emanuel Reynoso has arrived in Tucson Ariz., to commence his preseason work. The MLS All-Star was spotted in a photo shared by the club from a University of Arizona weight room on Thursday.

Reynoso did not show up when players were scheduled to report to Blaine on Jan. 13 and he was unexcused in his absence throughout the opening week of preparations.

The club said Sunday the Argentine attacking midfielder had traveled to Minnesota but needed to go through medical tests before joining the first team in Arizona this week.
