Be on lookout for Gallegos if he gets traded

Drew Silva breaks down St. Louis Cardinals RP Giovanny Gallegos' fantasy impact this season and how he can be a closer, should he get traded to a better-positioned team.

Video Transcript

DREW SILVA: The general narrative is that the Cardinals got swindled by the Yankees and the lugovoy trade from mid 2018. But St. Louis did acquire right hander Giovanni Gallegos as part of that deal. And he has turned into one of the most reliable relievers in the National League. Since the trade was made, Gallegos holds a 2.57 ERA, 0.776 width, and 170 strikeouts, with only 30 walks, over 136 and 2/3 total innings for the Cardinals. And in terms of width, walks, and hits per innings pitched, the 29-year-old has been better than ever here in 2021.

It's hard for set up guys to carve out a place on the fantasy scene, especially in formats that don't count holds. But there's a decent chance that the under 500 redbirds will consider trading Gallegos before the July deadline and that he will end up on a team that will allow him regular save opportunities. He's got the goods to be a closer. And as stated previously, the showing of bullpen dominance isn't just a one year blip. Stash him if he's out there and hope that the midsummer trade winds blow Gallegos in the direction of more saves.
