Longtime girls basketball coach Mary Jo Huismann steps down at Talawanda

Cincinnati girls basketball coach legend Mary Jo Huismann has stepped down as head coach at Talawanda High School.

She was head coach there for the past six seasons as part of her record-setting career. In a press release, the school announced that she would be involved with the girls basketball program in a different capacity.

She led Talawanda to consecutive league championships in the Southwest Ohio Conference, going 19-3 in 2022 and 23-1 in 2023. She is second in Ohio High School Athletic Association girls basketball history with 769 wins. She had a storied career at Mother of Mercy from 1972-2018 where she had 696 wins. She picked up her 700th career win while at Talawanda.

Huismann was recently honored with the John Wooden Legacy Award. The release stated that the award “serves as a testament to her unwavering commitment to excellence and sportsmanship. Her influence extends far beyond the confines of the basketball court, shaping the lives of countless athletes and instilling in them the values of perseverance, integrity and teamwork.”

Huismann is a member of the Ohio High School Basketball Hall of Fame and a 1999 inductee into the LaRosa’s Hall of Fame.
