Local Sports: Monroe baseball team holds on after big lead slips away

MONROE – What looked like it was going to be a mercy-rule win turned into a battle for Monroe’s baseball team Wednesday.

The Trojans nearly let an 11-run lead slip away before pulling out an 18-14 win over Ann Arbor Huron.

“We were on the verge of mercy ruling them,” Monroe coach Chris Clark said. “Up 11 runs and put in subs and the wheels came off. Seven full innings and over three hours of baseball.”

Clark was disappointed, but not entirely surprised that the Trojans made things so difficult for themselves.

“We are a very young team and this what we call growing pains,” he said.

Carson Liedel had a big day for Monroe. The sophomore rang up four hits including two doubles and a three-run home run and finished with five RBI.

Brady Welch and Breylon Richards added two hits each. Gavin Bileck drove in three runs and Devin Brossia two. Lead-off hitter Logan Loveland walked four times and scored three runs.
