Local Sports: Erie Mason cross country teams make clean sweep of TCC

HUDSON – Erie Mason's girls cross country team is finally back on top.

The Eagles took first place in Tuesday's Tri-County Conference Championship Meet and secured a league title for the first time in almost 20 years.

Mason was first with 51, followed by Whiteford (66), Sand Creek (75), Lenawee Christian (99), Morenci (106), Britton Deerfield (140), and Summerfield (159).

The top five for the Eagles were Bailey Meiring (third), Elizabeth Lambert (sixth), Lexi Colburn (ninth), Riley England (16th), and Mikaela Graves (17th).

Mason's boys made it a clean sweep, scoring 43 points to win the championship meet and capture the TCC title for the fourth straight season.

Leading the way were Austin Sulier (second), Parker Campbell (fifth), Collin Parent (10th), Jackson Carner (12th), and Porter Ravary (14th)

Sand Creek was runner-up with 73 points and a tiebreaker over Lenawee Christian (third place, 73 points). Morenci was fourth with 80 ahead of Whiteford (105), Britton Deerfield (158), and Summerfield (172).

Whiteford's Keegan Masters won the race in 16:51.89. Other Bobcat standouts were Brendon Masters (20th) and Gaspare Pirrone (22nd).

Shaun Cowen (31st) and Teddy Gault (35th) led Summerfield.

Whiteford's girls placed three runners in the top 10 with Braelynn Chiotti (seventh), Annabelle Gapp (eighth), and Emily Rasor (10th).

MaKenna Shipe (25th) was the top runner for Summerfield.

Huron advances

ALLEN PARK – New Boston Huron slipped past Gibraltar Carlson 2-1 in the Division 2 District semifinals Wednesday.

Huron (14-6) advanced to the District championship at 12 p.m. Saturday against Riverview (14-4-2).

Carlson finished the season 10-9-1 overall.

SMCC wraps league

MILAN – St. Mary Catholic Central wrapped up another undefeated Huron League season with a 25-10, 25-13, 25-21 sweep of Milan Wednesday.

Madeline Dettling had a strong all-around game for SMCC with 15 digs, 8 kills, and 2 blocks. Other Kestrels leaders included Jessica Costlow (12 kills, 9 digs), Mckenna Payne (32 assists), Ashley Ruhlig (12 digs), Jillian Anderson (3 blocks, 2 aces), Analiese Flint (3 blocks), and Molly Blanchet (2 aces).

SMCC improved to 27-6-1 overall.

Airport finishes fourth

CARLETON – Airport finished fourth in the Huron League as Riverview defeated the Jets in four sets Wednesday. The Pirates won 19-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-23.

Renee Shrewsbury (15 kills, 2 blocks), Jillian Baker (10 kills, 2 blocks), Madi Boehm (25 digs), and Peyton Zajac (19 assists, 14 digs) led Airport.

The Jets dropped to 3-7 in the league and 10-26-1 overall.

PREP SWIMMING

Milan streak hits 24 years

RIVERVIEW – Milan wrapped up the dual meet portion of the season with a 121-64 win over Riverview.

The Big Reds, 14-1 overall and 5-0 in the Huron League, extended their unbeaten streak in league dual meets to 24 years.

Winners were Kiera Luhrs (butterfly, 200 IM), Laila Nemeth (200 free), Annabelle Williams (50 free), Kam Stripp (100 free), Lila Mckenna (500 free), Krista Cook (backstroke), and Mary Kate Wayne (breaststroke).

Milan also won the medley relay (Williams, Stripp, Wayne, Sara Mitchell), the 200 free relay (Williams, Luhrs, Stripp, Mitchell), and the 400 free relay (Williams, Mitchell, Mckenna, Luhrs).

The team also set five pool records. Three individual records were set by Williams in 50 free and 100 free (opening leg of the 400 free relay) and Wayne in the breaststroke. Milan also broke pool records in the 200 free relay and the medley relay.

"The girls competed hard and have had an incredible attitude all year," Milan coach Dan Heikka said. "It is hard to keep the schedule they do, between practices and school.  They are a great group of very dedicated young women.  We are proud to be their coaches."
