Local Sports: Dundee opens season by winning star-studded event

DUNDEE – Dundee’s wrestling team opened its season by winning the Grappler Gold Invitational against some of the best teams in the state.

The Vikings, who have won six straight Division 3 state championships, finished with 186 points to 174 for 10-time defending Division 2 champ Lowell.

Perennial Division 1 contenders Hartland, Davison and Brighton rounded out the top five and Hudson, which has ruled Division 4 five times in the past seven years, was seventh.

Dundee’s champions were Bryan Sterling (113), Blake Cosby (144), Donny Beaufait (150) and Kole Katschor (157). Seconds went to Maison Haines (113), Kade Kluce (126) and Trey Parker (150) while Mason Katschor (106) and Owen Motylinski (175) placed third.

PREP WRESTLING

Airport wears crown

CARLETON – Airport beat St. Clair 40-27 in the finals to win its own Jack Cooper Memorial Tournament Saturday.

Kyle Link (132), Zakary VanBuskirk (138), Blake Haliburda (150), Jack Mills (175), Isaac Kemp (190) and Holden Otter (215) won all four of their matches for the Jets. Jayden Smith (106), Nicklas Bovair (126), Joseph Lesko (138) and Tristian Philbeck (285) finished 3-1.

Jefferson dominates

TECUMSEH – Tyler Vanderpool (120), Ty Rose (126), Issac Masserant (132), Ryder Mulherin (138), Gary Rice (144), Carter Simota (150), Martre Pearson (157) and Malachi Pribyl (175) all went 5-0 as Jefferson (6-0) won all five of its matches to take the title in the Tecumseh Tournament Friday.

The Bears beat Monroe 66-9, Ida 78-3, Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 68-12, Tecumseh 63-12 and Gibraltar Carlson 66-10.

Daniel Allen (113), Gabe Hall (190) and Anthony Cousino (215) were 4-1.

Angel Rincon (165) was 5-0 with five pins and Mason Goltowski 5-0 with three falls to lead Monroe, which finished with a 4-1 record. The Trojans opened with the loss to Jefferson, then beat Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 63-18, Tecumseh 48-35, Carlson 56-22 and Ida 60-21.

Collin Assenmarcher (120), Tyrone Evans (132), Brendan Bacon (150) and Logan Caudill (190) had four wins for the Trojans, and Gavin Bileck (215) finished 3-1.

"We had a fantastic day today," Monroe coach Jordan Mayes said.

Huron places second

LANSING – Champions Carson Gemmel, Landon Julio, Drew Ladach and Daniel Hubbard helped New Boston Huron take second Saturday in the Don Johnson Invitational at Lansing Eastern.

Hubbard had to beat two opponents ranked in the top five in the state. Braydon Hall and Daniel Gemmel were third and Caleb Frazier fourth.

Hailey Wisler and Cami Krzciuk both placed third for Huron’s girls.

Bedford is runner-up

WARREN –Bedford went 4-1 Saturday in the Warren Woods Tower Duals.

The Mules beat Oxford 35-33, Gaylord 40-19, St. Joseph 43-33 and the host team 72-6. The only blemish was a 33-26 setback against Bay City John Glenn.

Dylan Sevilla (132) and Chase Norbury (285) won all of their matches while Cody Dunendack (106), Noah Benore (144), Connor Hall  (157), Zach Miracle (165) and Connor Green (215) went 4-1.

Bedford’s went its B team to the Ypsilanti Invitational and Max Benore (106), Griffin Tibia (120) and Joe Moussaed (126) were first and Reece Steffen (113) took second.

Motylinski, Lane triumph

BLISSFIELD – Benjamin Motylinski (106) and Avery Lane (138) won titles, and Jackson Martin (132) and Cooper Buhl (176) were second for Dundee’s B Team in Saturday’s Blissfield Invitational.

The Vikings placed fifth with 120 points in an event that was ruled by Adrian Madison with 260.5.

Jefferson’s B team took sixth with 80, and St. Mary Catholic Central eighth with 77.

Karson Petit (144) was second for Jefferson and Vladimir Uhlik (144) and Jonah Busen (106) third. SMCC’s Kyle Bahaw was the 190-pound champ, beating teammate Eric Mathies in the finals.

PREP HOCKEY

Bedford on a streak

TOLEDO – Cobin Stelmaszak netted a hat trick, and Carter Klawonn added a pair of goals as Bedford extended its winning streak to four games with a 5-2 win over Anthony Wayne Friday

Nolan Welch picked up the win in goal.

The Mules (4-1) won their Southeastern Conference opener in the previous game, beating Ann Arbor Skyline 3-2 as Nolan West scored twice and Tyler Bartko added a pair of assists.

First win for Huron

WESTLAND – Jake Trythall scored all three goals of his hat trick in the second period to lift New Boston United to its first victory of the season.

Kenny Stucki scored the other goal in a 4-3 triumph over the Lakeshore Badgers. Brandon Powers played well in goal with 49 saves and Jaxon Zawodna logged two assists.  Other assists went to Tanner Kuhn, VItek Ulman and Cameron Tomsett.

PREP SWIMMING

Bylow leads Dundee

RIVERIVEW – Monroe was sixth in the Southeast Michigan Independent Swimming League Lower Division Relays last year. The Trojans were second to Riverview Saturday.

“It was a great day to be a Trojan on deck today,” Monroe coach Erin Dowen said. “Every boy on the team scored and helped our team achieve such an improvement to last year.”

Riverview took the title with 450 points, and Monroe was second with 332. Erie Mason-Ida took fourth with 254, Dundee fifth with 236 and Flat Rock seventh with 112.

Monroe’s best finish was a second in the breaststroke relay with Jayce Hay, Reggie Geftos, Zekiel Green and Josh Riggs. The Trojans were third in the diving, backstroke, butterfly and 700-yard freestyle relays.

Dundee’s Drew Bylow qualified for state in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles in the opening legs of relays and helped his team win the Under-Over Relay. Joining him on the winning relay were Dallas Bensch, TK Westbrook and Isaak Rubley. Dundee’s diving team of Lukas Neikirk and Aaron Brewer was second.

Milan relays second

MILAN – Milan was second in the butterfly (Gunnar Kruise, Tadas Zuzovskis, Ben Heikka and Parker Prior) and breaststroke (Steven Gottardi, Elias Hobbs, Heikka and Prior) relays in the Southeast Michigan Independent Swimming League Upper Division Relays Saturday.

The Big Reds scored 246 points to finish third behind Adrian (344) and Bedford (256).

BOXING

Buckley entertains with win

JACKSON – John Buckley of Joe’s-Arthur Lesow Community Center Boxing Club beat David Zenn of Lansing in a battle that was voted Bout of the Night Saturday.

Teammates Allante Johnson and Cole Wilson also beat opponents from Lansing, while Maximus Fenton and Gabe Machuca lost decisions.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Bedford teams split

TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s eighth graders beat Saline Gold 14-13 and fell 21-17 to Saline Blue Saturday. The seventh graders did the same thing with a 32-17 win and 25-19 loss.

Seventh grader Youssif Jomaa celebrated his birthday with 16 points.

ADULT SOCCER

Bucknor nets winner

Steve Bucknor scored with about a minute left to lift Athletico to a 2-1 win over Vikings in the Monroe Adult Indoor Coed Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday night.

It was the first win of the season for Athletico.

Brandon Noble scored four times to lead Lamour Printing past ABCDEF FC 13-4.
