LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wheatmore soccer wins as Garrison nears record

Mar. 5—TRINITY — Wheatmore raced past East Davidson 9-0 in nonconference girls soccer Monday at Wheatmore.

Ellie Garrison, coming off record-breaking seasons the last two years, had six goals and two assists to lead the Warriors, state finalists last year for the second year in a row.

She is now nine goals away from the NCHSAA record of 217 goals in a career.

Maggie Messner had two goals and one assist, while Natalie Bowman had one goal. Lucy Lockwood made four saves in goal for Wheatmore, which opened its season 1-0 while the Golden Eagles dipped to 1-1.

BOYS TENNIS

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, NORTHERN GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford lost 9-0 against Northern Guilford in Metro 4A Conference boys tennis Monday at Southwest. The Cowboys moved to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, BISHOP McGUINNESS

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian defeated Bishop McGuinness 7-2 in nonconference boys tennis Monday at Wesleyan.

Eli Henning (6-2, 6-1), Lucas Newton (6-4, 7-5), Tyler Layman (6-3, 6-4) and Jaden DiFoggio (6-0, 6-1) won in singles for the Trojans (2-1). Henry Henning/Eli Henning (8-3), Newton/DiFoggio (9-8 (14-12)) and Patrick Greene/Layman (8-3) won in doubles.

Luke Ansari (6-2, 6-1) and Tyler Sturgill (6-0, 6-1) won for the Villains (2-1).

EAST DAVIDSON, LEXINGTON

LEXINGTON — East Davidson swept Lexington 9-0 in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference boys tennis Monday at Lexington. The Golden Eagles improved to 1-2 overall.

LEDFORD, OAK GROVE

WALLBURG — Ledford edged rival Oak Grove 5-4 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference boys tennis Monday at Ledford.

Logan Thoma (6-0, 6-1), Julio Santillan (6-1, 6-2) and Zane Stowe (6-3, 6-2) won in singles for the Panthers (3-0 overall, 1-0 conference). Thoma/Santillan (8-2) and Drew Hundley/Stowe (8-3).

RAGSDALE, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

PLEASANT GARDEN — Ragsdale swept Southeast Guilford 9-0 in Metro 4A Conference boys tennis Monday at Southeast Guilford. The Tigers improved to 1-2 overall.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, GLENN

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford defeated Glenn 21-5 in nonconference boys lacrosse Monday at Southwest. The Cowboys improved to 1-2 while the Bobcats dropped to 0-2.

In the girls game, Glenn won 11-1. The Ladycats improved to 1-1 while the Cowgirls dipped to 0-3.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, NORTH DAVIDSON

WELCOME — Bishop McGuinness won 13-2 against North Davidson in Mid-State/Mid-Piedmont/Northwest Piedmont Conference boys lacrosse Monday at North.

John Miller had four goals and two assists for the Villains (3-1). Matthew Cetrone had three goals and two assists, while Mason Payne and Dom Porreca each added two goals. Nick Hargett chipped in a goal and two assists and Miles Fuehler had a goal and an assist.

In the girls game, Bishop won 15-2 to improve to 4-0. Caroline Duggan and Kate Dennen had three goals apiece, while Ella Suire and Clare Bandle each had two goals. Alison Varner, Ashlyn Showers, Stella Ropko, Finley Miller and Kendall Carpino each had one goal. Grace Khol (seven saves) and Maddie Edwards (two saves) split time in goal.

BASEBALL

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, WESTERN ALAMANCE

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford topped Western Alamance 4-2 in nonconference baseball Monday at Southwest.

Evan Hyde had three hits while Anders Lyndrup had two hits and an RBI for the Cowboys (3-0). Kaden Morgan also had two hits while Jason Parsons had a hit and an RBI.

Ryan Berry got the pitching win, striking out five while allowing three hits and one walk in four innings.

GLENN, MOUNT TABOR

WINSTON-SALEM — Glenn defeated Mount Tabor 12-6 in nonconference baseball Monday at Mount Tabor.

Brayden Winters had two hits and two RBIs for the Bobcats (2-0). Chase Gora added two hits and an RBI, while Craig McGhee had a hit and two RBIs. Evan Britt doubled and Dawson Clinard drove in a run.

Tyler Goodin earned the pitching win, striking out two in one shutout inning of relief.

TRINITY, SOUTH DAVIDSON

DENTON — Trinity defeated South Davidson 5-0 in nonconference girls soccer Monday at South Davidson. The Bulldogs improved to 1-1-1 overall.

EAST DAVIDSON, SOUTH ROWAN

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson topped South Rowan 5-3 in nonconference softball Monday at Brown Middle. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-0 overall.

LEDFORD, FORSYTH HOME EDUCATORS

WINSTON-SALEM — Ledford rolled past the host Forsyth Home Educators 15-0 in six innings Monday in nonconference softball.

Hailey Hoots had two hits and four RBIs for the Panthers (2-0). Sophie Wheat added a hit and three RBIs, while Alana Herrera had two hits and two RBIs and Emma Tesh had two hits and an RBI.

Leah Leonard earned the complete-game win, striking out five.

BOYS GOLF

AT MEADOWLANDS

WALLBURG — Oak Grove was first and Ledford was third in Monday's Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference boys golf match at Meadowlands.

The Grizzlies shot a 153 team score, followed by North Davidson (164), Ledford (165), Asheboro (196), Central Davidson (209) and Montgomery Central (244).

Ledford was led by Colton Slack (40), Jake Bethune (41), Connor Vernon (41) and Isaac Shaver (43).
