LOCAL ROUNDUP: Vermilion County Tournament seedings announced

Jan. 6—DANVILLE — The Vermilion County Principals Association released the seeds and the pairings for the 2024 Vermilion County Tournament on Thursday.

The defending championship in both the boys and girls divisions are the top seeds this year.

The Salt Fork Storm (13-5) earned that distinction in the girls tournament, while the Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin Blue Devils (15-3) garnered that honor for the boys tournament.

Hoopeston Area (8-8) in the No. 2 seed on the girls side, while Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin (9-8) in the No. 3 seed and Georgetown-Ridge Farm (7-7) rounds out the top-four seeds.

In the boys tournament, Oakwood (11-5) is seeded No. 2, Hoopeston Area (11-4) earned the No. 3 seed and Westville (12-2) rounds out the top-four seeds.

This year's tournament will once again be held at the Mary Miller Gymnasium on the campus of Danville Area Community College.

The tournament begins next Friday with three games in the girls division, while the boys action will get started on Saturday.

A champion in the girls tournament will be crowned at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, while the boys tournament concludes with its championship game at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20.

DANVILLE — Jeremiah Watson had a game-high 18 points as the First Baptist Knights defeated the Deland-Weldon Eagles 55-29 in prep boys basketball game on Thursday night.

Also scoring in double figures for First Baptist was JaiVon Nelson with 10.

Watseka 70, Schlarman 18

DANVILLE — Haven Meyer scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the first half as the Warriors quickly dispatched the Hilltoppers 70-18 in a Vermilion Valley Conference girls basketball game on Thursday.

Watseka led 19-2 after the first quarter and 36-8 at halftime behind Meyer, while Ava Swartz had 8 points in the first half.

Layla Briggs was the top scorer for Schlarman Academy with 10 points — all of them coming in the second and third quarters, while Addison Forsyth was next in scoring with 8 points.

FISHER — After being held to just 5 points in the first quarter, the Fisher Bunnies scored 17 in the second quarter on their way to a 46-31 victory over the Westville Tigers.

Melinda Luwando scored seven of her team-high 13 points in that second quarter for the Bunnies, which improve to 10-8 overall.

Westville, which fell to 3-14 overall with its ninth straight loss, led 6-5 after the first eight minutes, but the Tigers were held to just 5 points in the second quarter and 7 in the third as the Bunnies built a 31-18 advantage.

Gwen Bennett had a game-high 17 points for Westville.

MILFORD — The Bearcats pulled out a 37-34 victory over the Cornjerkers on Thursday night.

Hoopeston Area, which falls to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the VVC, was led in scoring by Claire Dixon with 12, while Maddie Barnes had 8 and Brylie Cox finished with 7.

Milford improves to 8-9 overall and 3-1 in the conference with the win.

Covington 45, Attica 40

COVINGTON, Ind. — Alex Sutherlin and Sydni Crain combined for 29 points as the Covington Trojans downed the Attica Red Ramblers 45-40 in a Wabash River Conference girls basketball game Thursday night.

Covington (9-8 overall, 3-1 in the WRC) rebounded from a 5-point first quarter to take a 24-19 halftime advantage behind 19 points in the second quarter. Sutherlin had seven of her team-high 15 in the quarter, while Crain had five of her 14 in the frame.

The Trojans held on in the fourth quarter, making just 3-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Adyson Goodwin scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half for Attica, but it wasn't enough.

Covington 45, Attica 40

MONTEZUMA, Ind. — Kera Dunaham had 11 points as the Falcons defeated the Panthers in Wabash River Conference play.

Cadence Dunham had 10 points for the Falcons, while Braxtyn Dunham had eight and Lauren Ellis added six.

The Falcons will take on Attica on Tuesday.

Seeger 55, Clinton Prairie 30

FRANKFORT, Ind. — The Patriots used balanced scoring and great defense as they beat the Gophers on Thursday.

Cadence White had 18 points and Rylea Wetz added 14 for Seeger, who is 13-5 and will return home Tuesday to play Tri-County.

PREP BOYS SWIMMING

Fountain Central 70, T.H. North 69

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Mustangs only won four of the 12 events, but they had four swimmers place in four events leading them to a 70-69 victory over the Patriots.

Eli Sowder was one of the four Fountain Central swimmers to place in four events. Sowder won the 500-yard freestyle event, took second in the 100 butterfly while also being a member on his team's first-place 200 free relay team and the team's second-place 200 medley relay.

Other four event place winners were Gage Harrison, Eli Davis and Brody Larkin. The other individual event winners for the Mustangs were Harrison in the 200 individual medley, and Armstrong in the 200 freestyle and diving.

PREP GIRLS SWIMMING

Fountain Central 108, T. H. North 70

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Senior Mary Rice won two individual events and was a member on two winning relays as the Mustangs defeated the Patriots 108-70 on Thursday.

Rice won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, while also swimming legs on Fountain Central's first place 200 medley relay and its 200 free relay teams.

Other individual event winners for the Mustangs include Haley Webb in the 200 free, Josie Harshbarger in the 100 backstroke, Peyton Hocking in diving and Elise Webb in the 100 butterfly.

Joining Rice on the winning 200 medley relay were Harshbarger, Elise Webb and Alydia Mellady. While the other members on the 200 free relay team were Allie Dotson, Haley Webb and Mellady.

PREP WRESTLING

Crawfordsville 53, Fountain Central 21

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Five wins by forfeit along with two pins was more than enough for the Athenians to take down the Mustangs in a dual meet on Thursday night.

Fountain Central won four of the nine contested matches, including three victories by pin. Earning those victories for the Mustangs were Dallas Simmons at 120 pounds, Bryson Davis at 157 and Andrew Mendoza at 285. Alan Melchore had the only decision victory for Fountain Central.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

DACC 88, Elmhurst JV 77

DANVILLE — The Lady Jaguars were able to get the win in their first game after Christmas Break.

Keiara Gregory had 26 points to lead Danville Area Community College, while Jayla Greet had 21 points, Wariya Alhassan had 12, Jillisa Briggs had 11 and Stephanie Stephen added 10 points.

The Lady Jaguars are 10-4 and will face Kankakee Community College on Wednesday.
