LOCAL ROUNDUP: Robinson scores 1,000th point in Vikings' victory

Jan. 30—PEORIA — Danville boys basketball junior JaVaughn Robinson reached the 1,000-point mark for his career on Saturday as the Vikings beat Springfield Calvary 76-71 at the Peoria Manual Shootout.

CL Dye had 16 points to lead Danville, who was up 42-26 at halftime, while Robinson and Devan Larkin each added 15, Darius Jay had 11, Jerry Reed had eight and Eric Bryant and Persiris Menifield each had four points.

Luke Blackford had a game-high 36 to lead Springfield Calvary.

The Vikings will stay on the road on Friday, when they travel to Normal Community in Big 12 play.

COVINGTON, Ind. — Austin Stein had 19 points with four assists and four steals as the Trojans won at home on Saturday.

Coye Ferguson had 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Covington, while Landon Herzog had 12 points with six rebounds and two steals and Kolten Haymaker had 10 points, three assists and three steals.

The Trojans will face Fountain Central on Thursday.

BISMARCK — The Blue Devils cruised to a victory over the Bearcats on Monday.

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin will play Georgetown-Ridge Farm on Thursday.

Oakwood 49, Iroquois West 39

FITHIAN — Jaydah Arrowsmith had 22 points as the Comets defeated the Raiders on Monday.

Gracie Hanner had 13 points for Oakwood, while Nikita Taylor had seven.

The Comets will take on Salt Fork on Thursday.

PREP BOYS SWIMMING

Seeger 79, Fountain Central 70

WEST LEBANON, Ind. — The Patriots were able to edge out the Mustangs in a dual meet on Monday.

Gage Harrison was first in the 100 freestyle and second in the 100 breaststroke for Fountain Central, while Eli Sowder was first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 500 freestyle and William Armstrong was first in diving.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Hayden Kler, Ayden Donaldson, Brody Larkin and Armstrong also won for the Mustangs, who will host Western Boone next Monday.

PREP WRESTLING

Local team wrestle at sectional

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — North Vermillion, Fountain Central and Covington started playoff action on Saturday at a sectional at Crawfordsville High School.

The Falcons ended up fifth as a team in the event and had two first-place finishers in Aden Rangel (126 pounds) and Wyatt Walters (132) Rangel is 33-0 this season and Walters is 33-0.

Andrew Botner (144) lost his first match of the season in a semifinal and settled for third with a 33-1 record, Aiden Hinchee (215) is 31-2 after taking second and Landen Baker (190) and is 21-2 after taking fourth.

Fountain Central was sixth with Dallas Simmons (120) leading the way with a second place finish and now has a 31-3 record.

Brandon Pigg (150) is 28-11 and took third while Andrew Mendoza (285) is 18-6 after also taking third. Dakoda Willoughby (138) took fourth and has a 33-6 record and Caylum Willis (165) was fourth and has a 25-15 record.

Covington took last as a team with Kaedeyn Lawson taking third at 190 and has a 16-8 record.

All of the finishers will move on to Saturday's regional at North Montgomery High School.

Seeger seventh at Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Patriots were able to take seventh in a regional at Lafayette Jefferson High School.

Kayden Stonebreaker was second at 120 and now has a 30-4 record for Seeger, while Anthony Bowen (138), Brody Ashby (157) and Kayne Acton (285) each taking fourth.

Those wrestlers will be going to Logansport on Saturday for regional action.

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

John Wood 84, DACC 56

QUINCY — The Jaguars were only down 34-31 at halftime, but were outscored 50-25 in the second by the Trailblazers on Saturday.

Jaylen Simmons had 11 points for Danville Area Community College, while Jaydin Dunlap had nine points, Lorenzo McMillion and Donovan Parker each had eight, Trevin Williams had six and Ryan Caddell and Darius Davis each had five.

Jordan Shelton had 19 for John Wood, while Joshua Talton had 14 points, Jakeb Wallingford had 12, Nolan Deitrich had 11 nd Kyle Smith added 10.

The Jaguars will return to action on Wednesday against Spoon River College.

Katey Flynn had 21 points for John Wood, while Alexis Pohlman had 13.

CHAMPAIGN — The Illini fought back from a 11-point halftime deficit to get the win on Sunday against the Golden Gophers.

Camille Hobby had a season-high 19 points, along with the game winning hook shot with 19 seconds left, for Illinois and had six rebounds.

Genesis Bryant had 19 points with a season-high seven assists and five rebounds, while Makira Cook had a team-high 22 points and Kendall Bostic had six points and 17 rebounds.

The Illini are 9-10 and 3-6 in the Big Ten and will face Michigan on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
