LOCAL ROUNDUP: Pone, Cowgirls open season with win

Nov. 27—RALEIGH — Southwest Guilford edged Athens Drive 45-43 in nonconference basketball Saturday at Athens Drive.

It was the season opener for new head coach Jessica Pone — a former Southwest standout as a player — and the Cowgirls, who will host crosstown rival High Point Central tonight.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD, EAST FORSYTH

WINSTON-SALEM — Southern Guilford rolled past East Forsyth 66-51 in the Bobby Martin Classic boys basketball showcase Saturday at R.J. Reynolds.

Jamias Ferere had 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Storm (2-0). Jucqarie Love added 17 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, while Jyi Dawkins had 12 points, three steals and two blocks and Josiah Hill had 10 points.

WRESTLING

AT ASHEBORO COLD TURKEY INVITATIONAL

ASHEBORO — Two Ragsdale wrestlers won their weight classes to highlight Saturday's Asheboro Cold Turkey Invitational at Asheboro.

Ayden Sumners won at 113 pounds, while Bradley Yocum won at 132 pounds. Nick Chafin was second at 157 pounds, and Jacob Copeland was third at 285 pounds.

AT DANNY LINKER MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

SPARTA — Eight area wrestlers placed in the top four — including two weight-class champions — during the Danny Linker Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Alleghany.

Thomasville's Eriberto Torres won at 157 while Ramiro Gutierrez won at 175 pounds. Josue Gomez took second at 132 pounds and BJ Sivongxey was third at 106 pounds.

Trinity's Kendall Miles and Jayden Henry were both fourth in their 138-pound brackets.

JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL

DAVIDSON-DAVIE CC, HENRY FORD

THOMASVILLE — DJ Suggs' basket in the final seconds lifted Davidson-Davie Community College past Henry Ford College 47-44 in overtime Sunday in nonconference men's basketball in Brinkley Gym.

Suggs finished with 26 points and six rebounds for the Storm (6-1). Jakob Moore added 15 points and six rebounds while Aden Taylor also had 15 points. Tyler Johnson followed with 13 points while Nygie Stroman had 10 rebounds.

DDCC shot 40% from the field for the game, making 10 from 3-point range. Henry Ford also shot 40%, making 12 3s. But the Storm finished with a 19-12 advantage in second-chance points and a slim 24-23 edge at the free-throw line.

DDCC will next play Wednesday on the road against Fayetteville Tech.

The Storm also won 67-54 against Montgomery College on Saturday. Suggs, Kobe Parker and Johnson each scored 11 points. Johnson and Moore each grabbed nine rebounds, while Suggs had eight rebounds and four assists.
