LOCAL ROUNDUP: HPU's Horn, Taylor finish strong at NCAA indoor meet
Mar. 11—BRIGHTON, Mass. — High Point University's Sydney Horn placed third in the women's pole vault while high jumper Andrew Taylor earned the men's program's first All-American honor during the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday and Saturday in Massachusetts.
Horn cleared 4.45 meters in the women's pole vault to earn her second-highest placement in her four indoor championship appearances. She also received her seventh straight All-American honor. Taylor took eighth place in the men's high jump with a height of 2.18 meters.
The Panthers, starting their outdoor season earlier this month, will host the Bob Davidson Team Challenge and Bill Webb Combined Events on March 22-23 and the VertKlasse Meeting on April 5-6.
MEN'S LACROSSE
CHARLOTTE — Jacksonville edged High Point University 10-9 in nonconference men's lacrosse Saturday in Charlotte.
Brayden Mayea scored five goals while Jack VanOverbeke had a goal and four assists to lead the Panthers (4-4). Zack Overend made 12 saves in goal.
Jacksonville went on a five-goal run in the second half to go up five with six minutes left. High Point rallied to pull within one with 1:30 left in the match.
Ibrahim Pio had two goals and an assist for Jacksonville (3-3). Ryan Della Rocco made 10 saves in goal.
BASEBALL
GREENSBORO — High Point University won Sunday's series finale 6-2 against Rutgers in nonconference baseball at First National Bank Stadium.
The teams split a doubleheader Friday — the Panthers lost the opener 7-4 before winning the second game 12-2. High Point finished the series with a 5-11 record while Rutgers moved to 10-4.
Brett Ahalt had three hits, including a double, while Sam Schner had a hit and three RBIs for High Point on Sunday. The Panthers scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to lead 6-0. Matt Little got the win, striking out five in 6 2/3 innings.
Cael Chatham had three hits, including a double, and an RBI in the first game Friday. Adam Stuart and Charlie Klinger each had a double and an RBI. Rutgers six straight runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to lead 7-1. Brett Wozniak took the loss, striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings.
Brayden Simpson had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs in the second game. Ahalt also had two hits, including a double, while Chatham homered and drove in three runs. Stuart and Klinger, who doubled, each added a hit and two RBIs. High Point led 5-0 through two innings. Gus Hughes got the win, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out six in eight innings.
JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL
DAVIDSON-DAVIE, BRYANT & STRATTON
WILMINGTON — Davidson-Davie Community College beat Bryant & Stratton 84-77 in the NJCAA Division II Region X finals Saturday at Cape Fear Community College.
Ethan English scored 18 points for the Storm (32-1), who led 48-38 at halftime en route to their fifth straight Region X title. DJ Suggs added 14 points, followed by Mike Wade with 13 points and Frank Stockton with 12 points and seven rebounds.
