Local roundup: Bishop advances in soccer playoffs

Oct. 31—KERNERSVILLE — No. 13 seed Bishop McGuinness shut out 20th-seeded N.C. Leadership Academy 4-0 on Monday at Bishop in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A West boys soccer playoffs.

Mahol Chom scored two goals for the Villains, while Leo Blacutt had a goal and an assist and Tyler Sturgill also scored a goal. Patrick Duggan, Will Valente and James Rashford each had an assist. Asael Guzman made two saves.

Bishop (13-8-2) will visit fourth-seeded Carver in the second round Thursday. The Yellowjackets won the teams' Northwest Piedmont Conference play matches in overtime.

EAST DAVIDSON, COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF DAVIDSON

DAVIDSON — East Davidson, seeded No. 31, lost 6-0 against second-seeded Community School of Davidson on Monday at CSD in the opening round of the NCHSAA 2A West boys soccer playoffs.

The Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 9-9-3.

OAK GROVE, PIEDMONT

MONROE — Twenty-seventh seeded Oak Grove fell 2-0 against sixth-seeded Piedmont on Monday at Piedmont in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A West boys soccer playoffs. The Grizzlies finished with a 9-14-1 overall record.

RAGSDALE, GRIMSLEY

GREENSBORO — Twenty-seventh seeded Ragsdale lost 3-0 against sixth-seeded Grimsley on Monday at Grimsley in the opening round of the NCHSAA 4A West boys soccer playoffs. The Tigers finished with a 12-8-4 overall record.

GIRLS TENNIS

CARY — Bishop McGuinness' Nina Holton reached the semifinals of the NCHSAA 1A girls tennis singles championship Friday and Saturday at Cary Tennis Park.

Holton defeated Roxboro Community's Olivia Ess 6-1, 6-0 before falling to Science and Math-Morganton's Manya Nallagangu 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Ledford's Kayleigh Batcheck and Brea White also played in the 3A doubles championship at Burlington Tennis Center. They lost 6-0, 6-3 against Carrboro's Sophia Herndon/Morgan Stowe in the first round.
