LOCAL ROUNDUP: Area teams advance in NCHSAA basketball playoffs

Feb. 28—KERNERSVILLE — Third-seeded Bishop McGuinness downed No. 30 seed Valor Prep 77-57 on Tuesday at Bishop in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A West boys basketball playoffs.

The Villains (25-3) will host No. 19 College Prep & Leadership (19-10) in the second round Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Nicholas Graves scored 17 points to lead Bishop, which led 42-27 at halftime. Cayden Long added 15 points, followed by Aiden Martin with 14 and Alex Waterfield with 13.

BISHOP McGUINNESS GIRLS, GRAY STONE DAY

KERNERSVILLE — Second-seeded Bishop McGuinness defeated No. 31 Gray Stone Day 71-17 on Tuesday at Bishop in the opening round of the NCHSAA 1A West girls basketball playoffs.

The Villains (23-4), who have won the last two state titles, will welcome No. 15 Hayesville (21-6) in the second round Friday at 5 p.m.

Adelaide Jernigan scored 24 points — including 22 in the first quarter — to lead Bishop, which led 55-9 at halftime. Jenna Moore followed with nine points, while Shannon Sullivan had seven points.

The Villains won in the first round of the 19 straight season and captured their 75th playoff win since 2005.

TRINITY BOYS, HENDERSONVILLE

HENDERSONVILLE — Nineteenth-seeded Trinity topped No. 14 Hendersonville 69-53 on Tuesday at Hendersonville in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A West boys basketball playoffs.

The Bulldogs (19-9) will visit third-seeded Newton-Conover (21-7) in the second round Friday.

Dominic Payne scored 25 points to lead Trinity. Jacob Hodges chipped in 13 points while Walker Parrish contributed 12 points.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD BOYS, WEST ROWAN

SUMNER — Fourth-seeded Southern Guilford beat No. 29 West Rowan 60-46 on Tuesday at Southern in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3A West boys basketball playoffs.

The Storm (27-1) will host No. 20 Robinson (18-8) in the second round Friday.

Jyi Dawkins scored 30 points to lead Southern, followed by Jamias Ferere with 16 points and Jucqarie Love with nine points.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD BOYS, ARDREY KELL

CHARLOTTE — Seventeenth-seeded Southwest Guilford lost 70-68 against 16th-seeded Ardrey Kell on Tuesday at Ardrey Kell in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A West boys basketball playoffs.

The Cowboys ended their season with a 21-7 overall record.

EAST DAVIDSON GIRLS, SALISBURY

SALISBURY — Twenty-seventh seeded East Davidson fell 53-36 against sixth-seeded Salisbury on Tuesday at Salisbury in the opening round of the NCHSAA 2A West girls basketball playoffs.

The Golden Eagles concluded their season with a 14-14 overall record.

WHEATMORE GIRLS, NORTH SURRY

MOUNT AIRY — Twenty-second seeded Wheatmore lost 58-47 against eleventh-seeded North Surry on Tuesday at North Surry to open the NCHSAA 2A West girls basketball playoffs.

The Warriors ended their season with 13-13 overall record.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD GIRLS, ALEXANDER CENTRAL

TAYLORSVILLE — Twenty-third seeded Southwest Guilford fell 47-39 against 10th-seeded Alexander Central on Tuesday at Alexander Central in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A West girls basketball playoffs.

The Cowgirls finished their season with a 16-10 overall record.

OAK GROVE BOYS, EAST HENDERSON

EAST FLAT ROCK — Twenty-seventh seeded Oak Grove lost 56-47 against sixth-seeded East Henderson on Tuesday at East Henderson in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3A West boys basketball playoffs.

The Grizzlies concluded their season with a 12-15 overall record.

BASEBALL

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, MOUNT TABOR

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford crushed Mount Tabor 15-0 in five innings Tuesday in nonconference baseball Tuesday at Southwest.

Jason Parsons had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs to lead the Cowboys (1-0), who scored nine runs in the first. Evan Hyde also had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Devin Hernandez had a hit and two RBIs.

Terry Sutherland got the win in four innings, striking out nine. He and Ryan Berry did not allow a hit.

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, CONCORD ACADEMY

HIGH POINT — High Point Christian beat Concord Academy 5-0 in five innings due to darkness Tuesday in nonconference baseball at Oak View Baptist Church.

Bryson Long, Jake Dunlap and Brock Powell each doubled while Evan Goodwin had a two-run triple for the Cougars (1-0). Hunter Kelley won the pitching win, allowing no hits while striking out five in 2 2/3 innings.

WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY, WAYNE COUNTRY DAY

GOLDSOBORO — Westchester Country Day fell 6-0 against Wayne Country Day in a meeting of NCISAA 2A foes Tuesday in nonconference baseball at C35 Sports Complex.

Jesse Covington tripled to highlight the Wildcats (0-1) on offense. Tony Perez took the pitching loss, striking out four, while Ryan ENgle added five strikeouts in relief.

OAK GROVE, SOUTH IREDELL

MIDWAY — Oak Grove defeated South Iredell 10-5 in nonconference baseball Tuesday at Oak Grove.

Seth Yarbrough, Dawson Shelton and Carson Everhart pitched for the Grizzlies (1-0), who led 6-0 through two innings.

RAGSDALE, FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale rolled past Forsyth Country Day 13-0 in five innings Tuesday in nonconference baseball at Ragsdale.

Owen Robinson doubled twice and drove in two to lead the Tigers (1-0), who led 10-0 through two innings. Kyle Maness added two hits and an RBI, while Joshua Medlin had a double and an RBI.

Robinson also picked up the win on the mound, striking out three while allowing just one hit and one walk in two innings.

LACROSSE

HIGH POINT CENTRAL GIRLS, GLENN

KERNERSVILLE — High Point Central defeated Glenn 15-1 in nonconference girls lacrosse Tuesday at AJ Simeon Stadium.

Adele Kattenfeld scored seven goals to lead the Bison (1-0). Joel Martin added three goals and an assist, while Dixie Clinard also scored three goals. Mallory Cook chipped in a goal and an assist, and Catherine Miller had a goal.

Irtiqa Khan made two saves in goal for Central.

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, LEXINGTON

HIGH POINT — High Point Central lost 5-0 against Lexington in nonconference girls soccer Tuesday at Correll-Morris Field. The Bison opened their season 0-1.

RAGSDALE, SOUTHERN GUILFORD

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale topped Southern Guilford 6-0 in nonconference girls soccer Tuesday at Ragsdale. The Tigers opened their season at 1-0 while the Storm moved to 0-1.

SOFTBALL

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, GLENN

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford rolled past Glenn 19-0 in three innings Tuesday in nonconference softball at Southwest.

Aniya Harris doubled, homered and drove in seven to lead the Cowgirls, who scored 13 runs in the first. Caroline Christman had three hits and three RBIs, while Camren Allen doubled twice and drove in three.

Christman got the pitching win, striking out five while allowing one hit and no walks in three innings.

BASEBALL

KNOXVILLE — High Point University lost 7-4 against No. 7 Tennessee in nonconference baseball Tuesday at Tennessee.

Adam Stuart went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Panthers (2-7), who fell behind a pair of runs in the first but pulled within 3-2 in the fourth. Cael Chatham added two hits, including a double, while Dawson Harmon had a hit and an RBI to highlight the offense.

Dalton Olsovsky took the loss in two innings, striking out three.

GOLF

CHARLESTON, S.C. — High Point University — led by a top-10 finish by Danielle Suh — took fifth place as a team during the Rivertowne Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Rivertowne Country Club.

Suh tied for ninth with a 1-over 71-76-70 — 217, while Ella Perna (T14, +4), Anna Howerton (T24, +8) and Maddie Hensley (T24, +8) also finished inside the top 25.

The Panthers totaled a 292-296-294 — 882 team score to take fifth.
