Local colleges: Ventura College, Moorpark College football teams snap streaks

The Ventura College football team will enter the postseason later this month looking to start a new winning streak.

That’s after the Pirates’ six-game winning streak, which was enough to clinch the SCFA Northern Conference’s automatic playoff berth last week, was snapped by a 21-19 loss at College of the Canyons on Saturday night in Santa Clarita.

“It was one of those games where we woke up in the second half,” Mooshagian said, “but unfortunately we have to live with it.”

The Pirates (7-3) await their postseason seeding Monday. Head coach Steve Mooshagian expects the No. 4 seed. Mt. San Antonio College (10-0) and Fullerton College (10-0) have also clinched automatic berths.

The loss forced VC to share the conference title with Allan Hancock College, which beat El Camino 55-45 to join the Pirates at 6-1 in conference play.

VC earned the conference’s playoff berth by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Pirates came from behind to beat Hancock 32-28 in Santa Maria on Sept. 23.

Jaylen Thompson rushed for 130 yards and a TD on touchdown carries and Lamonte James ran for 110 yards and two TDs on 16 carries to lead VC.

Trailing 21-7 late in the third quarter, VC pulled within 21-13 on a 4-yard run by James, which capped a 10-play, 81-yard drive with 40 seconds left in the quarter.

Thompson’s 25-yard run closed the gap to 21-19 with 9:04 to play, but the potential game-tying conversion pass was ruled an interception.

Mooshagian disagreed with the decision.

“He caught it and came away from (the) ball,” Mooshagian said.

VC’s Southern California regional semifinal will be Saturday, Nov. 25.

Moorpark 44, Antelope Valley 7

Noah Cronquist caught 13 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score as the Moorpark College football team ended its season with a rout at host Antelope Valley College on Saturday in Lancaster.

The win snapped the Raiders' six-game losing streak. Moorpark finished its season at 3-7.

Macloud Crowton completed 17 of 25 passes for 251 yards and a TD and Vincent Walea (Oxnard High) completed 14 of 21 passes for 141 yards and a TD.

Crowton and Cronquist (Moorpark High) ended the season as the most productive aerial combination in the Southern California Football Association, leading the region in passing and receiving yardage, respectively.

Vance Harris, Payton Casillas (Thousand Oaks High), Christian Cojulun (Grace Brethren High), Luis Hernandez, Darnell Stephens and Bertin Placid recorded sacks for the Moorpark defense. Hernandez, Placid, Marcus Arthur (Simi Valley High) and Sal Maria (Rio Mesa High) had interceptions.
