Liverpool vs Southampton LIVE!

Jayden Danns struck twice and fellow teenager Lewis Koumas also scored as a young Liverpool side booked an FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United with a 3-0 victory over Championship Southampton on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old son of former Premier League and Wales international Jason Koumas received a superb pass from Bobby Clark on the edge of the penalty area before shooting into the bottom corner via a deflection.

The 18-year-old Danns netted his first goal for Liverpool in the 73rd minute when he dinked the ball over goalkeeper Joe Lumley, and scored again 15 minutes later when he pounced on a loose ball after Lumley batted away Conor Bradley's shot.

The eight-times FA Cup winners, who beat Chelsea 1-0 to win the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at Wembley, will travel to arch-rivals Manchester United in the last eight over the weekend of March 16.

Jurgen Klopp's kids march on in FA Cup

22:18 , Marc Mayo

After reading the names β€˜Koumas’ and β€˜Danns’ on the scoresheet, fans of a certain age could be forgiven for believing they had accidentally checked in on a Championship clash between Cardiff and Crystal Palace circa 2010.

However, the Liverpool of 2024 (and beyond) are anything but second-tier as, rather than Jason and Neil, this was a case of Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns registering their first goals for the club in a memorable 3-0 FA Cup win over Southampton.

β€œKoumas’ first goal, I said before the game he’s a fantastic finisher, and the goals are the same side at youth level.

β€œDanns is quite a good finisher but this goal was no different to youth level, he knows what he has to do. He’s really calm and the second shows his nose, he was in the right spot.”

Reds ahead at the break

At times, this game felt a bit like a pre-season friendly.

A gifted but wayward lower-league visitor, showing flashes of class but without much end product, against a gifted but wayward home team packed with unfamiliar youngsters.

And it is the latter who earned the breakthrough late on through that deflected Lewis Koumas strike.

Plenty of reason for Southampton to believe they can get back in the tie but this is a bad place to concede the first goal.

Two goals already at Stamford Bridge as Leeds and Chelsea exchange blows. Nicolas Jackson has just levelled up for the hosts.

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool boss, up next to preview the tie

19:43 , Marc Mayo

On the challenge of the last few days: "Just try to recover, no big celebration, just in the stadium and dressing room. We flew home, tried to recover and find a team for tonight. A couple of problems added on. Ryan [Gravenberch] was clear, [Andrew Robertson] got ill, [Alexis Mac Allister] was only back this morning so we'll see how long he can do. That’s a challenge."

On his youthful team: "[The final] was great, absolutely, but it's different to start a game. Southampton have changed a lot as well. The boys are ready; to defend, that's the most important thing, and we'll try to get a goal. [Lewis] Koumas is a striker, technically outstanding, Bobby [Clark] and James [McConnell] have now introduced themselves. We have to be really good on the ball and [Southampton] have a really good style on the ball. We’ve had no time to prepare but the boys will be fine."

Southampton boss Russell Martin on ITV

19:41 , Marc Mayo

On chances of an upset: β€œI’m excited about the challenge, every game of football you want to win. You prepare to win, we understand how difficult that is whatever team [Liverpool] pick. Also it’s a really brilliant challenge for us, for me the biggest test is to show what we’ve got and be the team we want to be.”

On the Liverpool kids: β€œThey’re the young guys that helped them win the cup, very talented players. They also have a strong back four. Whatever team they put out here is a strong team, so no different feeling to before. It’s a big challenge.”

What has to change for his side: β€œCourage, to play always as the team we want to be, and aggression. If you bring both, the team functions really really well. The only 45 minutes I’ve been unhappy with in a really long time was Hull, in the first half. Apart from that I’ve been so pleased with the players.”

Harvey Elliott backs Jurgen Klopp to deliver unprecedented quadruple

19:35 , Marc Mayo

Harvey Elliott insists Liverpool can win the quadruple in Jurgen Klopp's final season after beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup Final.

"I think so [that we can win all four]," the winger said.

"It's going to be hard but we are in the best possible position to do that. Today was a massive help but it will be down to us. If we show the desire and hunger then who knows [what we can achieve] at the end of the season?"

18:23 , Marc Mayo

Jurgen Klopp has admitted he is unsure if Thiago Alcantara will play again this season.

β€œI don’t know, to be honest (if he will play again this season),” Klopp said.

β€œIt’s a couple of things but what he has to do now from a medical point of view and I don't know if it will mean again if he can play again. It's not a short-term thing and that's why I'm not 100 per cent in it. I'm not sure if it's the same but the region is the same.”

That raises the possibility that Thiago has played his final match for the club, with the 32-year-old out of contract in the summer.

Southampton team news hint

18:08 , Marc Mayo

Saints coach Russell Martin has confirmed he will make several changes to his team for tonight’s game.

After back-to-back defeats, Southampton probably don’t know their best line-up anyway at this moment in time.

"We have such a relentless schedule and such a big game on Saturday so it is inevitable there will be some changes," he told his pre-game press conference.

"But we will put out a team that we think is capable of a performance we are proud of and that can win.

"We are going there to win, we’re all winners otherwise we are not in this job. It’s a cup game so we are not going to sit back."
