HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: JPII boys and girls soccer start playoffs with victory

Both the St. John Paul II girls and boys soccer teams kicked off their postseason with a Round of 32 victory on Saturday.

For the girls, the No. 8 Lions (16-2-1) defeated No. 25 St. Marys (Westfield) 5-0 for their 15th straight win. Sisters Addison Cheney and Ella Cheney each scored twice, while Raegan Dillon added another goal.

For the boys, the No. 12 Lions (9-7-3) beat No. 21 Brighton 4-1 behind a hat trick and one assist from Nico Sullivan. Jose Aguilar scored the other goal, while Cody Boghdan, Jay Imad, Henry Roy, and Philips Ferrari led the charge on defense.

Boys Soccer

Division 3, Round of 32: No. 23 Belchertown 2, No. 10 Nauset 1: The Warriors (11-2-6) lost their second game of the season as they come up just short in their opening round matchup.

Girls Soccer

Division 3, Round of 32: No. 13 Auburn 2, No. 20 Nauset 1: After being tied 1-1 after regulation, the Warriors (12-3-4) went into a penalty kick shootout and lost 5-4.

Girls Volleyball

Division 4, Round of 32: No. 4 Hudson 3, No. 29 Sturgis West 0: After beating No. 36 O'Bryant 3-1 in the preliminary round, the Navigators (12-5) season came to an end in the Round of 32.

Cross Country

The cross country teams traveled to Wrentham to compete at the Frank Mooney Coaches Invitational. Races are divided by grade and separated by large or small school.

Falmouth

The freshman boys 3K race was led by Lukas Bushy (12:02) for a top 50 finish. Mike Dunn and Lucas Corriea also finished with personal records. Taryn Joyce led the Falmouth girls in the freshman girls 3K with a time of 14:34, while Isabella Cabral also finished strong under 15 minutes.

Kunio Saito and Jaidon Gray both netted personal records in the sophomore boys 5K, while Mickayla Codd had a good race in the sophomore girls 5k.

For the junior senior boys 5k, Adrean Blackwood led all Falmouth runners with a time of 18:44. Conor Furey and Gavin Friel both finished under 21 minutes, while Mark Davidson, Griffin Jones, and Liam Costa all finished the season with personal records.

Barnstable

Large School Division: Jaxson Merrill led the boys team with a time of 16:47 and placed 15th in the senior race, while Cameron DeGrace (19:55) and Andy Coombs (25:19) also ran well. Gabe Pichardo had the highest place of the day with a third place finish in the junior race and a new personal record of 17:03.

Kevin DeFeudis paced the sophomore boys in 17:16, which was good for seventh place. Other notable performances in the sophomore race were Ryan Wolfe (18:12), Jay Cornwall (20:39, PR), Adrian Pichardo (20:41), and Daniel Gomes (23:08, PR).
