Postgame recap: Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars down Pittsburgh Steelers

The Jacksonville Jaguars continue their road trip by heading to AFC North territory to meet the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

The Jaguars improved to 5-2 last week with their victory against the New Orleans Saints, and they enter Sunday with a little more rest for quarterback Trevor Lawrence after his knee injury two weeks ago. Running back Travis Etienne is in the middle of a red-hot streak as the first Jaguar with three consecutive multi-TD games.

After a rocky start, the Steelers have won consecutive games, beating the Rams 24-17 last week. The question for the Jacksonville secondary: Will they grab any picks from Pittsburgh's pair of Kenny Pickett and George Pickens?

Jaguars report card: Defense close to lights-out showing, offense wasted good field position

Times-Union sports columnist Gene Frenette grades the Jaguars’ performance in a 20-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers based on execution, effort and game circumstances. - Gene Frenette

Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard makes several clutch plays filling in for Andre Cisco

Fifth-year safety Andrew Wingard started in Cisco’s place and turned in a clutch performance in the Jaguars’ 20-10 victory at Acrisure Stadium – the sixth consecutive victory for the Jaguars in Pittsburgh, counting the 2018 AFC divisional playoff triumph -- and the team's fifth in a row this season. - Garry Smits

Jaguars hold off Steelers 20-10 en route to best start to season since 1999

It was always the Jags, and safety Andrew Wingard helped make it that way with a fourth-quarter interception that set up the team's final score to put the game out of reach of the Steelers in a 20-10 victory. The Jacksonville Jaguars (6-2) won their fifth straight game while the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3) had a two-game winning streak snapped. See the quick takeaways. - Demetrius Harvey

FINAL: Jaguars 20, Steelers 10 - rookie Antonio Johnson intercepts final play

A nice highlight for rookie Antonio Johnson, who picks off Mitch Trubisky's last pass as time expires. A dominant day on defense for the Jaguars, who improve to 6-2 for 2023. - Clayton Freeman

Two-minute warning: Jaguars draining the clock

It's fourth down, so Pittsburgh will get the ball back. But the Jaguars are up 20-10 and close to victory. - Clayton Freeman

That might do it: Jaguars force turnover on downs

Mitch Trubisky wasn't able to get the Steelers going. Josh Allen added his second sack of the game, Darious Williams nearly picked off a badly-thrown ball and a fourth-down pass ended in a drop. The Jaguars take over on downs with under three minutes left and they're about to go to 6-2. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus converts fourth kick, Jags open two-score margin

It's looking better for the Jags. The down side is that for the eighth time, a drive inside Pittsburgh territory ends up without points, in part because of a Luke Farrell false start. Evan Engram had moved the ball inside the 20 with a long catch-and-run from Trevor Lawrence. But when the drive stalled out, Brandon McManus arrived once more for a 37-yard field goal. Time is running short, too.

Big play: Andrew Wingard intercepts Mitch Trubisky

It's Andrew Wingard's turn to think takeaways. Mitch Trubisky launched an obviously dangerous pass into multiple coverage deep, and Wingard was right there to pick it off over the middle.

Officials waved off his return of the pick, but the Jaguars take over at their own 41 with a little over 9 minutes to play and a 17-10 lead in Pittsburgh. - Clayton Freeman

T.J. Watt sacks spoil another Jaguars drive

Another drive into Pittsburgh territory, again coming away without a touchdown. The Jaguars' possession started nicely, with Trevor Lawrence mixing short passes to Evan Engram and Christian Kirk, along with a Travis Etienne run inside the 40. But Calvin Ridley couldn't hold a Lawrence pass inside the 20 on first down, and on third down, Lawrence took a sack by T.J. Watt that pushed the Jags outside field goal range. The Steelers get the ball back at their own 20 with a chance to tie. The Jaguars lead 17-10 with 10:14 left. - Clayton Freeman

End of third quarter: Jaguars 17, Steelers 10

The Jaguars will have second and 6 when the fourth quarter begins in Pittsburgh. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Steelers: Pittsburgh responds, George Pickens catches Mitch Trubisky pass and hurdles two Jags into end zone

That's a highlight fans will be seeing again. For the first time, the Steelers find some momentum on offense, with Mitch Trubisky somehow escaping pressure for a wild conversion to Diontae Johnson, then another first down for Jaylin Warren. Then, a highlight: Trubisky passed to George Pickens, who made a hurdle of Jaguars defenders Andrew Wingard and Buster Brown on his way to the end zone. This game is far from over in Pittsburgh.

Jaguars 17, Steelers 10, 0:53 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence finds Travis Etienne along sideline for 56-yard TD

Finally, the end zone. The Jaguars punished a poor Pittsburgh punt. Travis Etienne lined up wide right and blasted past the defense, and Trevor Lawrence found him along the sideline, with a safety gambling and missing. The result: Etienne dashed 56 yards to the house. Doug Pederson went for two and Etienne converted for a 14-point edge.

Jaguars 17, Steelers 3, 5:05 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Challenge flag time: Doug Pederson challenges acrobatic catch by Pittsburgh's George Pickens

That was a terrific effort by George Pickens, twisting on the sideline and dragging the toes to grab Mitch Trubisky's sideline pass for a first down near midfield. But Jaguars coach Doug Pederson hurled the challenge flag, arguing that Pickens didn't get his right foot down before landing out of bounds, and officials agreed. That means a punt for Pittsburgh, shortly after a Jaguars drive also stalled out. The Jags' defense has played excellent football today. The Jaguars still lead 9-3 midway through the third quarter. - Clayton Freeman

Sacksonville returns: Josh Allen squashes Mitch Trubisky, Steelers go three and out

Kenny Pickett is officially out with that rib injury, so it's a different quarterback who has to deal with the Jacksonville pass rush. Josh Allen gets in there and downs Mitch Trubisky as the Steelers go nowhere. For all the Jaguars' miscues on offense, the defense is keeping them in command with a 9-3 lead with nine minutes left in the third quarter. But the Jags could really use another touchdown to feel more comfortable. - Clayton Freeman

Fumble: Steelers strip Tank Bigsby, Pittsburgh recovers on third Jaguars turnover

Yet another Jaguars turnover in Pittsburgh territory. Tank Bigsby, in for Travis Etienne with the starter apparently suffering from an ankle injury, gets stripped on a rush to the right and the Steelers recover. The play holds up after review. Despite three turnovers, the Jaguars lead the Steelers 9-3 with 9:55 left in the third quarter. - Clayton Freeman

How many field goals in a row has the Jaguars' Brandon McManus made? He's halfway to Jags record

Jaguars kicker Brandon McManus has missed a field goal in only one game this season. He's bounced back very well from that game when he missed one attempt and had another blocked in a 37-17 loss to Houston. In Pittsburgh, he converted three before halftime in tough weather conditions. - Garry Smits

Second half kicks off: Jaguars receive in Pittsburgh

It's Jaguars football to open the second half. The Jaguars five times entered Pittsburgh territory in the first half, but they've got only three points to show for it. - Clayton Freeman

HALFTIME: Jaguars 9, Steelers 3

The Jaguars get a break there. Chris Boswell converted a 55-yarder, but officials whistled the rare offensive offside on the Steelers -- the right guard was lined up ahead of the center, according to the crew. Boswell tried again from 60 yards but missed wide right. It's a six-point lead for the Jaguars at the halftime. while the Steelers are at least for now without their starting quarterback, Kenny Pickett. The home crowd is audibly furious in Pittsburgh. - Clayton Freeman

Injury watch: Steelers QB Kenny Pickett hurt during two-minute drill, Mitch Trubisky is in

A significant moment in this game. Kenny Pickett is slow to get up after being crunched into the turf by Adam Gotsis right at the 50, just after throwing incomplete. Early indication is a shoulder or rib injury. The Steelers are still driving with 14 seconds until halftime. Mitch Trubisky is on at QB. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Jaguars: Jags settle for Brandon McManus kick after Steelers blow up screen to Evan Engram

That's more points for the Jaguars, but after five possessions inside the Pittsburgh 35 in this first half, it feels like they could easily have more than nine on the scoreboard. Travis Etienne kept the ball moving in Steeler territory, but on third and short, Trevor Lawrence threw a screen to Evan Engram and the Pittsburgh defense was all over it. So Brandon McManus appeared for his third field goal, this one from 38 yards. The Jaguars extend their lead but miss another opportunity as the Steelers hang around in this one.

Jaguars 9, Steelers 3, 1:04 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Two-minute warning: Jaguars are driving across midfield

Good field position for the Jaguars. Kicker Chris Boswell lost his footing on the kickoff, resulting in a short kick. The Jaguars now have a fresh set of downs in Pittsburgh territory after a defensive holding flag. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Steelers: Kicker Chris Boswell is good after 93-yard march

When this drive began, the Steelers had zero first downs from four possessions and were pinned back against their own 2. Kenny Pickett changed that, marching Pittsburgh up the field with four passes to Diontae Johnson and exploiting pass interference by Foye Oluokun. The Steelers reached the 5, but the Jags stuffed a second-down run and Johnson slipped on Pickett's third-down pass. Chris Boswell converted a 22-yarder to end a 93-yard drive.

Jaguars 6, Steelers 3, 3:59 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Interception: Damontae Kazee picks off floated Trevor Lawrence pass in end zone

A turnover spoils another Jaguars drive, and this was a bad decision by Trevor Lawrence. The QB floated a pass into multiple coverage in the end zone, where Damontae Kazee leaped for an easy pick. Before that, it had been an excellent possession: Lawrence had connected twice with Calvin Ridley, the second a high-difficulty toss floated in between Steelers in front of and behind the receiver, and Travis Etienne had rushed down inside the 10.

Maybe the worst pass of the year for Lawrence, and one he'd like to have back. Jaguars still lead 6-0, 10:15 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

End of first quarter: Jaguars 6, Steelers 0

At the end of one, the Jags' defense is in control in Pittsburgh. - Clayton Freeman

Fumble: Jaguars lose ball on shovel pass, Steelers' Cole Holcomb recovers

The Jaguars were lined up to score again, set up by Trevor Lawrence's pass to Christian Kirk along with a roughing-the-passer flag. But a shovel pass went bad for the Jags. Lawrence threw to Evan Engram in the line but the receiver was immediately blasted by Kwon Alexander, and Cole Holcomb recovered for Pittsburgh. A scoring chance evaporates. - Clayton Freeman

Flying Jaguar: Darious Williams soars to break up pass, Jaguars force another Steelers three-and-out

Stat time: The Steelers have yet to get a first down. Diontae Johnson passed up a chance to convert while gambling for more yardage on a short pass, a second-down run netted nothing and Kenny Pickett underthrew George Pickens on third down, allowing Creekside High School product Darious Williams to chase back and dive at full extension to tip the ball away. Excellent start for the Jacksonville defense. It's still Jaguars 6-0, 4:27 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus connects on 51-yarder, extends lead

Still no end-zone time for the Jaguars, but they're moving the ball in less-than-nice weather. After Trevor Lawrence incurred a sack, he fired a strike to a leaping Calvin Ridley across midfield and then found Evan Engram with a short pass, although Jacksonville missed out on the first down. That meant the return of Brandon McManus, who made another long field goal in rain and wind look easy with a perfect 51-yarder.

Jaguars 6, Steelers 0, 5:54 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Tre Herndon nearly picks off Kenny Pickett: Jags force another Steelers three-and-out

Kenny Pickett got lucky there. His pass went directly to Jaguars defensive back Tre Herndon. Unfortunately for the Jags, Herndon couldn't hold the slick football, which he might have been able to take back to the end zone. But it's still a three-and-out for Pittsburgh. The Jags take over again, up 3-0 with nine and a half minutes left in the opening quarter. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus gives Jags lead after drive marked by penalties

The officials' yellow flags helped, and then hurt, the Jaguars on that possession. A very late pass interference penalty on Pittsburgh's James Pierre advanced the Jags into field goal range. But an offensive facemask by Evan Engram on an attempted stiff-arm backed the Jaguars outside the 40. Trevor Lawrence completed a short pass to Engram to return inside the 35, and Brandon McManus booted a 50-yarder through the rain for an early Jags lead.

Jaguars 3, Steelers 0, 10:47 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Sacksonville: Jaguars' Travon Walker, Josh Allen converge on QB Kenny Pickett, force three-and-out

Nice start for the Jacksonville defense. After Kenny Pickett's deep first-down pass in slick weather glanced off the fingertips of Diontae Johnson, the Jaguars' pass rush sacked Pickett on second down and forced offensive holding on a third-pass that Johnson again dropped (almost into the hands of Devin Lloyd). Defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell will like the start of this one. Still 0-0, 14:03 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Football time: Jaguars win toss, defer against Steelers

It's kickoff time. The Jaguars will go on defense first. - Clayton Freeman

Gene Frenette: Jaguars' takeaway defense a breath of fresh air, but can it be sustained?

Jacksonville Jaguars senior defensive assistant Bob Sutton planted the seed before the 2022 season, back when the team was still getting adjusted to the culture and system of doing things instituted by newly hired coach Doug Pederson.

Sutton didn’t want to clutter the players’ minds with too many ideas, as he mistakenly saw other teams do in his 40 years of coaching in the NFL and college. Instead, he wanted them to focus on one thought: takeaways. - Gene Frenette

Jaguars set to take on Pittsburgh Steelers with plenty of history on their side

For Jacksonville, the franchise is intimately familiar with Pittsburgh dating back to the team's days in the AFC Central, a now-defunct division that held both the Jaguars and the Steelers from 1995-2002 prior to the then-expansion Houston Texans joining the fray and the division splitting into the AFC North and AFC South. - Demetrius Harvey

Jaguars-Steelers inactives: CB Tyson Campbell, S Andre Cisco both out against Pittsburgh

Not good news for the Jaguars' secondary. Cornerback Tyson Campbell and safety Andre Cisco are both among the Jags' inactives against the Steelers, both due to hamstring injuries. Also inactive are wide receiver Zay Jones, outside linebacker Yasir Abdullah, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen and defensive lineman Tyler Lacy. - Clayton Freeman
