Dunlap falls just short of trophy at IHSA boys tennis state finals

Dunlap came up just short of another boys tennis state trophy.

The Eagles finished fourth place at the Illinois High School Association Class 1A state finals held over three days in the Chicago area. Dunlap took third statewide in 2022 and won the 2017 title.

Dunlap used its depth to score 17 team points, one point behind third-place Champaign Central. Chicago Latin (44) won the title and Lisle Benet (20) was third.

The Class 1A singles champ was Nicholas Patrick of Rock Island Alleman, while Benet's Zach Bobofchak and Hugh Davis won the doubles title.

Notre Dame senior Scott Anderson was the last Peoria-area individual playing Saturday, losing in the semifinals of the consolation bracket and falling one win short of the fifth-place match.

Anderson had advanced to the championship bracket quarterfinals, as did Bryton Short of Metamora and the Morton doubles team of seniors Aiden Belsley and Blake Shoemaker. Each lost early Friday to end their title hopes. All had won three matches on Day 1 of the finals, held Thursday.

Short and the Morton doubles team eventually ended their finals with losses in the consolation quarterfinals.
