Statesman’s 6A Fab 5 in action this weekend

The Statesman’s Fab 5 are all in action this weekend and the contests kicked off on Thursday as the #4 team in 6A, Weiss routed LBJ 44-19 as the Wolves upped their season mark to 2-0 for the first time in program history.

For the second game in a row, QB Jax Brown connected on 4 scoring throws as he piled up 241 yards passing. Jacques Spradley-Demps reeled in 6 catches for 143 yards and one score, while highly recruited junior Adrian Willson snagged 4 passes for 89 yards and a pair of scores.

Weiss’ rookie head coach Vernon Hughes was named the 6A Coach of the Week by Dave Campbell’s Texas High School Football magazine after the opening 37-7 win over Round Rock. Brown led the offensive side of the ball as he threw for 262 yards.

The area’s top 6A program, Westlake looks to go 2-0 as they take on an always tough Converse Judson program. #2 Vandegrift tackles the #2 5A eleven, Cedar Park in a traditional matchup of Williamson County perennial powerhouses.

6A’s #3, Lake Travis hosts Cibolo Steele at Cavalier Stadium after posting a 13-6 come-from-behind win over Arlington Martin.

#5 Manor looks to extend its record to 2-0 as they visit Cornerstone Christian in a non-district matchup. Following a lineage of running backs that includes Texas Tech’s Tahj Brooks and Southern Cal’s Quinten Joyner, Titus Petteway rushed for 152 yards and 3 scores, while adding 3 catches for 85 yards and a touchdown as the Mustangs rolled past LBJ 39-26 on opening night.

Here is the Statesman’s 5A Fab 5

#1 Georgetown was a  37-7 winner over Copperas Cove as Nate Booras opened up his senitor campaign with 383 yards passing and 3 TD passes. The Eagles travel to face Vista Ridge at Monroe Stadium. The Rangers overcame a 14-0 deficit to dump Bowie 21-14 in overtime.

#2 Cedar Park mauled 6A Cedar Ridge as QB Ayden accounted for 278 yards of offense and 3 TDs in the Timberwolves’ 29-7 win. Cedar Park looks to duplicate the win over a 6A squad as the T-Wolves look to upset Vandegrift.

#3 Leander dominated the second half last week in its 48-28 win over Pflugerville, but the Lions were knocked out of the ranks of the unbeatens last night as Bastrop nipped Leander 41-40.

#4 Crockett pitched its first non-AISD shutout since 2009, as the Cougars rolled to a 42-0 win over SA Highlands. Crockett looks to stay unbeaten as the Cougars face Llano on the road this evening.

#5 Hays dumped Akins 36-0 last Friday and the Hawks will travel down I35 to face 1-0 SA Churchill.

Wimberley still atop 4A Fab Five chart

After last week’s  60-6 demolition of Canyon Lake, the Texans are back in action as they travel to tangle with 1-0 SA Pieper.  The Texans are looking to extend their regular season winning streak to 16 since their 7-0 loss to Alamo Heights in the 5th week of the 2021 campaign.

Always powerful Regents, ranked #2, takes on Midland Christian in a TAPPS tilt after downing SA Central Catholic 45-14 to open the season.

#3 Lampasas looks to secure its second straight win over a 5A foe as the Badgers venture to Nelson Field to face Northeast. The Badgers downed Elgin 31-23 to open the season.

In a clash between ranked foes, #4 Johnson City hosts #5 Thrall.

Johnson City opened the campaign with a convincing 58-20 win against Comfort while the Tigers celebrated a 42-14 opening night win over Somerset.

QBs and WRs put up gaudy first week stats

Earning the Statesman’s player of the week honor, Hutto’s signal caller, Will Hammond accounted for 511 yards of offense and 7 TDs as the Hippos scored early and often in their 66-35 victory over San Marcos.

Hammond, a Texas Tech commit, threw for 411 yards and 6 scores while rushing for 100 yards and a score. Alex Green was Hammond’s top target as he hauled in 5 balls for 201 yards and 3 scores.

East View’s Cormyc Guerrero led area receivers with 205 yards and 11 catches in the Patriots’ 34-20 loss to Westwood  while Texas baseball commit Anderson's Ed Small hauled in 3 scoring passes as the Trojans dominated  McCallum 42-0 in the annual Taco Shack Bowl at picturesque House Park.

East View is looking for its first win of the season as the Patriots face winless Copperas Cove, while Anderson travels to Bible Stadium to face Rouse.

Thursday night action

Achieve reached 2-0 for the first time in program history as the Polar Bears pounded Eastside 50-12, while Hendrickson notched its first win of the young season as the Hawks dumped Killeen Ellison at Shoemaker Stadium.

In 6A play, Killeen High’s 48-40 win over Stony Point prevented a 5th 2-0 start for the Tigers in the last 8 years, while Westwood continued its recent dominance over Austin High with a 49-14 win at the Palace on Parmer. The Warriors have won the last 7 meetings between the 2 schools since the Maroons’ 21-14 OT win during the 2010 season.

Looking for a shootout?

If last year’s game is any indication, the game that might be the night’s highest scoring affair, Hutto travels to 0-1 Liberty Hill.

The Panthers will be looking to avoid a 0-2 start after losing its opener 49-17 against Wagner last Saturday.

Hutto is 3-0 versus the Panthers in the last 5 years, winning 56-49 last year, 42-19 in 2019 and prevailing 52-51 in overtime in 2018 non-district action
