Just a few days before 42 state champions are to be crowned across Iowa's three classes, the action was fast and furious during the second day of competition at the Iowa boys state wrestling tournament on Thursday.

With a few upsets and strong performances, the state quarterfinals saw an influx of wrestlers clinch spots in the semifinals in their respective weight classes.

Don Bosco still holds the lead in the 1A team standings with 95.5 points following the end of the quarterfinals. Alburnett is in second place with 80.5 points while Wilton sits in third place with 72.5 points.

Columbus Catholic’s Mason Knipp (36-0) earned a 5-2 decision over Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Michael Block (44-3).

Nodaway Valley’s Trenton Warner (48-2) won in a nailbiter, earning a 3-1 sudden victory over Maquoketa Valley’s Aiden Salow (39-4).

West Branch's Logan Wright (33-3) earned a 7-1 decision win over Emmetsburg's Gage Jorgenson (26-5).

East Buchanan’s Cody Fox (44-2) pinned AC/GC’s Payton Jacobe (47-7) at the 4:17 mark.

9:28 p.m. The 215-pound quarterfinals has concluded

Maquoketa Valley’s Brady Davis (40-3) pinned Don Bosco’s Kyler Sallis (28-4) at the 2:53 mark.

West Hancock’s David Smith (31-6) earned a 3-2 tiebreaker over Alburnett’s Emmitt Fleshman (49-9).

Interstate 35’s Eli Green (36-5) earned a 10-3 decision win over South Winneshiek’s Parker Timp (39-8).

Nodaway Valley’s Ashton Honnold (47-2) earned a 11-3 majority decision over Bellevue’s Jack Hiland (35-10).

9:16 p.m. MaKade Bloker, Louden Huisenga keep undefeated records intact at 190 pounds

North Butler-Clarksville’s MaKade Bloker (38-0) pinned West Hancock’s Kale Zuehl (35-8) in 50 seconds.

Don Bosco’s Landon Fernandez (29-2) defeated Nashua-Plainfield’s Tate White (43-5) in a 9-7 decision.

Emmetsburg Jace Nelson-Brown (37-4) earned a majority decision over Treynor’s Zach Robbins (36-5).

Starmont’s Keaton Moeller (44-1) defeated Pleasantville’s Carter Metcalf (42-7) with a 12-3 majority decision.

Alburnett’s Tayten Coufal (45-4) pinned Wilton’s Owen Adlfinger (45-10) at the 4:47 mark.

West Sioux’s Jesse Lewis (44-0) pinned Southeast Warren’s Brayden Scheffers (34-7) at the 4:28 mark.

Graettinger-Terril’s Caleb Swedin earned a 6-2 decision win over Don Bosco’s Jaxon Larson (26-8).

Cascade’s Brock Morris defeated Ogden’s Kolton Munson (31-3) with a 7-3 decision win.

8:05 p.m. 120-pound quarterfinals wrapped up

Alburnett’s Rowdy Neighbor (51-2) pinned Wayne’s Max Pollock (20-4) at the 5:35 mark.

AC/GC’s Tegan Slaybaugh (49-2) earned a 3-0 decision over Missouri Valley’s Eli Becerra (35-5).

Akron-Westfield’s Cael Morrow (37-2) defeated Highland’s Luke Guseman (17-6) in a 6-3 decision.

Alburnett's Atlee Dewitt (51-5) defeated Jesup's Ayden Bergman (44-4) with a 7-0 decision.

Lisbon's Wesley Sadler (38-9) won a nailbiter over Logan-Magnolia's Crosby Yoder (42-2) in a 2-1 decision.

Wilton's Liam Adlfinger (32-4) earned a huge 4-2 decision win over Lake Mills' Lucas Oldenkamp (45-2).

7:22 p.m. Class 1A's 106-pound quarterfinals has some great matchups

Along with the Hayden Schwab-Ethan Humphrey matchup, other matches include Alburnett's Atlee Dewitt versus Jesup's Ayden Bergman, Lisbon's Wesley Sadler versus Logan-Magnolia's Crosby Yoder and Wilton's Liam Adlfinger versus Lake Mills' Lucas Oldenkamp.

Don Bosco's Hayden Schwab and West Branch's Ethan Humphrey will be the first matchup of the night for the Class 1A quarterfinals. Schwab (35-0) will look to stay perfect while Humphrey (31-2) will look to knock off one of the best wrestlers in the 106-pound bracket.

5:51 p.m. Bettendorf advanced six wrestlers to the Class 3A semifinals on Friday

Jake Knight (120 pounds), Timothy Koester (126 pounds), Jayce Luna (132 pounds), Cody Trevino (138 pounds), Lincoln Jipp (165 pounds) and Brayden Koester (190 pounds) earned spots in the semifinals.

5:21 p.m. Cooper Martinson has a been force to be reckoned with at 285 pounds

Martinson (34-3), a multi-sport athlete, has made an impact on the wrestling mat for Southeast Polk. In the tournament thus far, he's secured a 14-second and a 35-second pin to help him advance to the Class 3A semifinals.

Waterloo East's Maximus Magayna (43-0) pinned West Des Moines Valley's Nic VanArkel at the 4:18 mark to remain undefeated.

Carlisle's Asa Hemsted (40-3) defeated Johnston's Braden Blackorby (29-4) with a close 8-7 decision.

Indianola's Dax Clatt (33-13) got past Ames Jackson Winkey (12-2) in a 9-3 decision win.

Linn-Mar's Kane Naaktgeboren (35-0) kept his unbeaten record alive with a fall over Prairie's Alex Bumba (33-11) in 1:01.

Ankeny Centennial’s Cody Vandermark earned a 3-0 decision win over Dubuque Hempstead’s Mitchell Pins.

Fort Dodge's Dru Ayala earned a dominant 16-3 majority decision over Bondurant-Farrar's Reid Foster.

Bettendorf's Jake Knight (33-1) defeated Council Bluff's Jaymeson VanderVelde by technical fall at the 4:26 mark.

3:17 p.m. Cale Vandermark gets things started with a win at 113 pounds

Cale Vandermark (Ankeny Centennial) earned a 2-1 decision win over Mac Crosson (Indianola).

Iowa City West's Alexander Pierce, a defending state champion, won a 5-2 decision over Mat Prine (Southeast Polk).

Norwalk's Tyler Harper (38-0) remained unbeaten with a 13-6 decision over Dubuque's Hempstead's Landon Gottschalk.

Ankeny's Isaac Wignall defeated Iowa City High's Kendall Kurtz with a 12-6 decision.

3:16 p.m. Nico DeSalvo, Carew Christensen, Weston Porter also earn spots in the 106-pound semifinals

Southeast Polk's Nico DeSalvo (36-1) defeated Dowling Catholic's Jack Wallukait (23-2) in a tough 5-3 decision.

Waukee Northwest's Carew Christensen (34-11) earned a 4-2 decision win over Burlington's Braxton Hutchinson (36-2).

Lewis Central's Weston Porter 34-0 pulled off a 3-2 tie breaker to defeat Ankeny's Benjamin Walsh 24-9 to remain unbeaten.

3:02 p.m. And we're off! The Class 3A quarterfinals is now underway

In the first matchup of the quarterfinals, Prairie's Dylan Munson punches his ticket to the 106-pound semifinals with a pin over Western Dubuque's Kellen McKenna at the 1:56 mark.

2:41 p.m. Class 3A's 106-pound quarterfinals should be a fun one

Dowling Catholic’s Jack Wallukait and Southeast Polk's Nico DeSalvo only have one blemish on their season record, and they’ll face off in the second matchup at 106 pounds.

That matchup will be followed by Lewis Central’s Weston Porter (33-0) versus Benjamin Walsh (28-4) and Waukee Northwest’s Carew Christensen (33-11) versus Burlington’s Braxton Hutchinson (36-1).

The 2A quarterfinals at 285 went quick.

Osage's Mac Muller went to 50-0 after pinning Glenwood's Trent Patton and Hampton-Dumont-CAL's Carter Heilskov will take a 42-3 record into the semifinals after pinning Mount Vernon's Ethan Wood.

Columbus/WMU's Russel Coil earned a 6-0 victory over ACGC's Trent Cakerice and Albia's Paul Ballard stayed perfect at 39-0 with a 7-2 victory over Creston's Max Chapman.

12:40 p.m. — Ballard's Henry Christensen advances at 215

Ballard's Henry Christensen earned a tough 3-2 victory over Davenport Assumption's Rhett Schaefer to advance to the 2A semifinals at 215 with a 39-2 record.

New Hampton/Turkey Valley's Braden McShane (41-1) moved onto the semifinals with a 15-4 win by major decision over Winerset's Jaydn Cooper and South Tama County's Gavin Bridgewater defeated Clarinda's  Karson Downey by a 5-2 decision to make up the rest of the 2A semifinal field at 215.

12:31 p.m. — Mason Koehler gets first 2A quarter win at 215

Gleenwood's Mason Koehler 42-6 advanced to the 2A semifinals at 215.

Koehler pinned Perry's Keegan Snyder during the quarterfinals.

12:31 p.m. — 2A competition at 190 wraps up

The other two 2A quarterfinals matches at 190 have concluded.

Perry's Kain Killmer (37-3) earned a 6-2 quarterfinal victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura's Parker Moritz and North Polk's Ben Bryant (34-6) defeated Dike-New Hartford's Zach Adelmund by a 5-4 decision.

12:23 p.m. — Thomas Sexton wins first quarterfinal at 190

Decorah's Thomas Sexton is headed to the 2A semifinals with a 38-7 record at 190.

Sexton (38-7) knocked off second seed Brody Sampson of Ballard by a 10-6 deicsion in the quarterfinals. Top seed Jarrett Roos of Sheldon/South O'Brien (26-0) also advanced after defeating Benton Community's Troy Kupka by a 7-4 decision.

12:23 p.m. — 2A 175 quarterfinal matches wrap up

The other two 2A quarterfinal matches at 175 have concluded.

12:15 p.m. — Hesston Johnson Jr. advances at 175

Roland-Story's Hesston Johnson Jr. is headed to the 2A semifinals at 175.

Johnson Jr. (41-2) pinned Clarinda's Dominick Polsley in the quarterfinals. Top seed Austin Scranton of Anamosa (47-0) also advanced after earning a 13-3 win by major decision over Western Christian's Rylan DeGroot.

12:15 p.m. — 2A 165 quarters conclude

The 2A quarterfinals at 165 are over.

Humboldt's Broedy Hendricks (45-2) earned a 3-2 victory over Benton Community's Brenden Heying and Dubuque Wahlert's Colin Young pulled off an 8-6 victory over Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Zayvion Ellington to remain unbeaten at 18-0.

12:05 p.m. — Max Gast wins opening quarter match at 165

Osage's Max Gast was the first to advance to the 2A semifinals at 165.

Gast (13-1) scored a 10-7 victory over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows' Caleb Seaba in the quarterfinals. Roland-Story's Logan Powers (31-3) continued his Cinderella run by pinning Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley's Brock Mulder to advance to the 2A semifinals at 165.

12:05 p.m. — Remainder of 2A 157 semifinal field set

The other 2A quarterfinal matches at 157 saw Greene County's Gavin Scheuermann (30-3) prevail by a 6-2 decision over Algona's Taevyn Zinnel.

New Hampton/Turkey Valley's Karson Kolbet win a 4-2 match by tiebreaker over Bishop Heelan Catholic's Sir Brandon Watts and Sergeant Bluff-Luton's  Bo Koedam (48-2) defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL's Taylor Mahler by a 6-1 deicision.

11:55 a.m. — Tucker Stangel stays unbeaten at 157

Osage's Tucker Stangel went to an impressive 52-0 by winning the first 2A quarterfinal match at 157 during the boys state wrestling tournament.

Stangel pinned Burlington Notre Dame's Blake Wilson during the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.

11:54 a.m. — Rest of the 2A semifinals set at 150

Union's Caleb Olson (45-1) is headed to the 2A semifinals at 150 after earning a 3-0 victory over Ballard's Tucker Vitzthum during the quarterfinals.

Algona's Tate Slagle (42-2) advanced with a 1-0 victory over Charles City's Talan Weber and Anamosa's Hudson Scranton (44-5) prevailed by sudden victory, 8-4, over Mount Vernon's Mikey Ryan.

11:46 a.m. — Lucas Kral gets first 2A quarterfinal win at 150

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura's Lucas Kral is headed to the 2A semifinals at 150 with a 46-2 record.

Kral defeated Burlington Notre Dame's Dirk Boyles by a 3-1 decision during the quarterfinals.

11:43 a.m. — Rest of the 2A semifinal field at 144 is set

Osage's Anders Kittelson remained perfect on the season at 43-0 with a 12-3 win by major decision over Algona's  Ashton Moreno in the 2A quarterfinals at 144.

Independence's Tyler Wieland (39-4) won the other 2A quarterfinal match at 144 with a 1-0 victory over Bishop Heelan Catholic's Jackson Kinnetz.

11:39 a.m. — Tucker Wheeler, Royce Butt advance

Prairie City-Monroe's Tucker Wheeler and Mount Vernon's Jackson Jaspers earned the first two quarterfinal wins at 144 in 2A.

Wheeler (49-4) earned a 4-3 victory over Mount Vernon's Jackson Jaspers and Butt (19-3) edged Vinton-Shellsburg's  Carter Lamont by a 4-2 decision.

11:33 a.m. — Cadyn Wild and Jase Jaspers win in 138 quarters

Davenport Assumption's Cadyn Wild (34-4) earned a 6-2 victory over West Marshall's Shane Hanford and Mount Vernon's Jase Jaspers (38-3) pulled off a 5-0 victory over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock's Ragen Hasche to start the 138 quarterfinals in 2A.

Osage's Blake Fox (48-1) rolled into the semifinals by pinning Algona's Barrett Morgan and Solon's Jordan Schmidt (47-6) won an 8-7 match by tiebreaker over Independence's Kaden Kremer in the other 2A quarterfinal at 138.

11:22 a.m. — Rest of the 2A 132 semifinal field is set

The other 2A quarterfinal matches at 132 saw Burlington Notre Dame's Kaiden Dietzenbach (29-1) earn a 10-2 major decision over Benton Community's Elijah Kupka, Decorah's Mason Avila (33-2) edge Oskaloosa's Kaiden Parker by a 5-3 decision and Roland-Story's Kade Blume (38-0) defeat Washington's Aaron Boone by a 3-0 decision.

11:17 a.m. — Matt Beem gets first 2A quarterfinal win at 132

Glenwood's Matt Beem will take a perfect 37-0 record into the 2A semifinals at 132 pounds.

Beem defeated Charles City's Carter Cajthaml by fall during the quarterfinals.

11:15 a.m. — Amare Chavez gets 2A quarterfinal win at 126

South Tama County's Amare Chavez is headed to the state semifinals with a 33-4 record after defeating Atlantic's Aiden Smith by a 5-2 decision during the 2A quarterfinals at 126.

Union's Jace Hedeman (43-1) defeated Humboldt's Tyce Clarken by a 6-0 decision in the 2A quarterfinals at 126. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont's  Landen Davis (35-1) defeated Burlington Notre Dame's C.J. Davis by an 8-3 decision and Webster City's Carson Doolittle (41-0) earned an 11-2 major decision over Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Ethan Skoglund to make up the rest of the 2A semifinal field at 126.

11:05 a.m. — Carter Schmauss wins quarterfinal thriller

Crestwood's Carter Schmauss (34-1) is headed to the 2A semifinals at 120 pounds after earning a 7-5 win over West Delaware's Brayden Maury by sudden victory during the quarterfinals.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont's Gage Spurgeon (36-1), West Lyon's Ryan Bahnson (36-3) and Davis County's Emmitt Newton (44-4) won the other 2A quarterfinal matches at 120. Spurgeon defeated No. 1 Kaden Weber of Nevada and Bahnsom downed No. 2 Vinny Mayberry of Glenwood by fall.

10:58 a.m. — Rest of the 2A 113 semifinal field set

The rest of the 2A semifinal field is set.

Burlington Notre Dame's Carter West (43-2) pulled off a 7-2 win by sudden victory over Crestwood's Mitchell Schmauss during the quarterfinals. West Marshall's Jon Gonzalez (42-4) defeated Williamsburg's Lincoln Schropp by a 5-0 decision and Union's Brayden Bohnsack (40-4) earned a 12-4 major decision over Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Jayce Curry.

10:53 a.m. — Linden Phetxoumphone wins at 113

Webster City's Linden Phetxoumphone (35-1) is keeping the family tradition going by advancing to the 2A semifinals at 113.

Phetouxmphone earned a 10-0 major decision over Roland-Story's Caiden Latch in the quarterfinals.

10:49 a.m. — 2A 106 semifinals set

The 2A semifinal field at 106 was set following quarterfinal wins by Nevada's Urijah Courter and Fairfield's Cael McCabe.

Courter 38-1 pinned Glenwood's Brody Black and McCabe (31-4) defeated Union's Coy Mehlert by a 3-2 decision.

10:46 a.m. — Mount Vernon's Klayten Perreault advances

Mount Vernon's Klayeten Perrault moved on to the 2A semifinals at 106.

Perrault (44-0) pinned Waukon's Kale Berinobis during the quarterfinals.

10:38 a.m. — Easton Enyeart gets first win in quarterfinals

Ballard's Easton Enyeart opened the 2A quarterfinals with a victory over Atlantic's Taye Jordan at 106 pounds.

Enyeart (39-4) advanced to Friday's 2A semifinals with a 9-2 victory over Jordan.

10:28 a.m. — Class 2A quarterfinals have begun!

The 2A quarterfinal round of the boys state wrestling tournament has started!

There are a handful of Des Moines' downtown restaurants within walking distance of Wells Fargo Arena if you're hungry for a bite or need to organize a Valentine's Day date in the middle of all of the tournament chaos.

The city has just about everything. Whether you're feeling a burger, sushi or something outside the box (like fried alligator), Des Moines has you covered.

As we await the start of 2A quarterfinals at the boys state wrestling tournament, here is a list of things to look for at the state wrestling tournament.

9:32 a.m. — Day 2 of boys state wrestling has begun!!

The second day of the boys state wrestling tournament is underway!

The 2A second round consolations are in full swing. They will be followed by the 2A quarterfinals and third round consolations to wrap up Thursday's 2A session. The 3A sessions will run from 1:30-5 p.m. and 1A from 6-9:30 p.m.

Things are getting Rowdy

Make no mistake about it, Alburnett junior Rowdy Neighbor has got the most unique and clever name at this year's boys state tournament and maybe in Iowa sports period. As Neighbor began his match, the cheerleaders led with a "Let's. Get. Rowdy.", showcasing how much of a huge benefit his name is to the cheer squad.

The No. 1 seed is back in action today.
