IU football defeats Indiana State 41-7. Jaylin Lucas and Tayven Jackson both impress

The Indiana football team is 0-1 to start the 2023 season, but there were a number of positives in the Hoosiers' 23-3 loss to Ohio State last week.

Aaron Casey led IU's defense with 11 tackles while Phillip Dunham had an interception. As for the offense, things didn't go very well. Brandon Sorsby started at quarterback for IU, going 8-of-16 for 58 yards. Tayven Jackson (1-of-5 for 24 yards) also saw action. Cam Camper (3 for 35) was the only Hoosier with more than 1 reception. IU rushed for 71 yards (2.2 per carry).

Today the Hoosiers welcome Indiana State (0-1), which lost its opener to Eastern Illinois, 27-0. The game will mark a return for Sycamore's head coach Curt Mallory. Mallory's father, Bill, was IU's coach from 1986-1994.

Tayven Jackson got some great experience tonight. It should serve him well against Louisville next week. Jackson completed 18 of 21 pass attempts for 236 yards. Brendan Sorsby threw for another 108 yards (9 for 16).

Jaylin Lucas ran for 88 yards on 10 attempts. He caught 4 passes for 39 yards. Omar Cooper Jr. had a nice game with 7 receptions and 101 yards.

Phillip Dunnam led the defense with 8 total tackles. Aaron Casey added another 7 tackles.

While Indiana State played tough for a while, the Hoosiers are running away with this one now. A drive that lasted 15 plays and 74 yards was topped off by Nicholas Radicic's 21-yard field goal.

10:50 left 4Q: Josh Henderson runs in a TD for IU

A lot of Hoosiers are getting in on the action tonight. Senior running back Josh Henderson ran in a 3-yard touchdown to extend IU's lead over ISU. Henderson has 12 carries for 60 yards.

1:39 left 3Q: IU's Christian Turner gets in the endzone

Senior running back Christian Turner punched in a 1-yard run to extend the Hoosiers lead. That was an impressive drive by IU. It lasted 6:03 and consisted of 13 plays for 93 yards.

Indiana's Cam Camper ruled out for the game

According to the BTN broadcast, Cam Camper will not return tonight. He is on the sideline talking with multiple position groups, though.

IU wide receiver Cam Camper suffers right knee injury

Cam Camper suffered a right knee injury near the end of the first half of IU’s Week 2 matchup against Indiana State. The senior wideout caught a pass from Brendan Sorsby and limped toward the sideline as Indiana State defensive lineman Juju Williams also laid on the ground injured.

Halftime: Indiana 24, Indiana State 7

Brendan Sorsby took over at QB the last couple of drives for IU and has 84 yards through the air (7 for 11). Tayven Jackson finished the half with 140 yards (9 for 11).

Jaylin Lucas had 7 carries for 61 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also caught 2 passes for 34 yards. Donaven McCulley led IU with 3 catches for 45 yards.

For ISU, Korbin Allen has 3 carries for 21 yards.

Chris Freeman hit a 28-yard field goal to give IU a little more of a cushion going into the half.

Indiana's Cam Camper came off the field and headed to the trainer's table during the drive.

2:00 left 2Q: Indiana State recovers Jaylin Lucas fumble for first TD of game

Jaylin Lucas took a handoff and tried to avoid a couple of ISU defenders, but fumbled. Maddix Blackwell, from Bloomington South, picked the ball up and ran it back for a 75-yard score.

6:05 left 2Q: Indiana State has longest drive of game, but it ends in an IU interception

Indiana State's offense had a nice drive that lasted 12 plays and 67 yards (6 minutes, 12 seconds), but it didn't end the way the Sycamores wanted. ISU got down to Indiana's 13-yard line but Indiana State quarterback Evan Olaes threw an interception to Nic Toomer on 4th and 8.

The IU offense has been electric. Tayven Jackson is 7 for 9 through the air with 126 yards. Jaylin Lucas, who had an impressive one-handed catch at the end of the quarter, has 3 rushes for 56 yards.

On defense, Lanell Carr has a sack and 2 total tackles. Andre Carter and Phillip Dunnam also have 2 tackles each.

After several close calls, IU punched it in with a 10-yard QB draw by Tayven Jackson. The play was reviewed but it was later confirmed.

Jaylin Lucas has been the star so far in this one. Like before, Lucas ran to the right side for a 25-yard touchdown.

The Hoosiers are on the board with a strong opening possession. Jaylin Lucas took a handoff from quarterback Tayven Jackson and ran around the right side of the offensive line for a 25-yard touchdown. Jackson went 3 for 3 (33 yards) on that drive.
