Indiana football vs. Penn State: Brendan Sorsby, defense play well, but IU falls 33-24

Oct 28, 2023; University Park, Pennsylvania, USA; Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Brendan Sorsby (15) throws a pass during the first quarter against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium.

The Indiana football team is winless in the Big Ten this season (2-5 overall) and visits No. 10 Penn State (6-2 overall, 3-1 Big Ten), which is coming off its first loss of the season at the hands of Ohio State.

The Hoosiers are among the nation's worst offensive teams, and the Nittany Lions are among the national leaders defensively.

Michael Niziolek and Zion Brown will have analysis throughout, and we will have scoring updates, highlights and more. Please remember to refresh.

FINAL: Penn State 33, Indiana 24

Can't fault IU's effort. That's the best the Hoosiers have played in a while. IU now 0-13 all-time at Penn State.

1:33 left in 4Q: SAFETY PENN STATE

Brendan Sorsby is hit on the first play of the drive and the ball is knocked loose and kicked around before finally squirting its way through the end zone for a safety. Penn State 33, Indiana 24.

1:46 left in 4Q: TOUCHDOWN PENN STATE

Drew Allar hits KeAndre Lambert-Smith for a 57-yard score to give the Nittany Lions the lead right back. Bright side, IU has some time left. Penn State 31, Indiana 24.

2:58 left in 4Q: INDIANA FIELD GOAL

Chris Freeman connects from 35 yards and it's a tie game. Indiana 24, Penn State 24.

5:02 left in 4Q: INTERCEPTION INDIANA.

Josh Sanguinetti picks off Drew Allar, who heaves it up after being pressured by Hoosiers defenders. It's Allar's first interception as a college QB. Big play for the Hoosiers. IU ball at the Penn State 21-yard line. Penn State 24, Indiana 21.

5:53 left in 4Q: Quick three-and-out

Trent Howland fumbles on a 3rd-and-1 carry, but the Hoosiers are lucky enough to recover. So it's an IU punt instead of Penn State ball deep into IU territory. Another bomb punt from James Evans (59 yards) puts Nittany Lions at their own 12-yard line. Penn State 24, Indiana 21.

7:46 left in 4Q: IU defense gives offense a chance

Hoosiers force another punt and it goes in for a touchback. Brendan Sorsby emerges from the tent and will give it a go. Can IU do the unthinkable? Penn State 24, Indiana 21.

10:54 left in 4Q: TOUCHDOWN INDIANA

Brendan Sorsby finds Omar Cooper Jr., who makes a nice move to evade a few defenders to score on a 26-yard touchdown. That's two really good drives in a row from the IU offense. Sorsby now has three TD passes but looks to be banged up. He's working out his right shoulder on the sideline. Penn State 24, Indiana 21.

END 3Q: Penn State 24, Indiana 14

Hoosiers have the ball and a first down after Brendan Sorsby hits Donaven McCulley on a key third-down conversion. IU ball at its own 33-yard line to start the fourth quarter.

2:09 left in 3Q: Special teams letting Hoosiers down

IU's best actual drive of the day ends with no points after a missed 37-yard field goal attempt after a third-down blindside blitz sack. The field goal would have made it a one-possession game. Special teams continue to be an issue. Penn State 24, Indiana 14.

8:39 left in 3Q: TOUCHDOWN PENN STATE

The Nittany Lions stick to the run on the opening drive of the second half and work their way down the field methodically, chewing up yards and time off the clock. Then Drew Allar hits his tight end Theo Johnson for a 16-yard touchdown. Penn State 24, Indiana 14.

HALFTIME: Penn State 17, Indiana 14

An intentional grounding penalty pushes Penn State field goal attempt to 50 yards, and he makes it as time expires for the first half.

Overall, a good first half for the Hoosiers. Brendan Sorsby cashed in on two Penn State breakdowns and the Hoosiers defense has played well. A muffed punt and Sorsby's late interception really swung momentum. Penn State 17, Indiana 14.

1:01 left in 2Q: Interception Penn State

Brendan Sorsby's first mistake of the day. He throws across his body, and the field, and is intercepted as the Hoosiers were looking to retake the lead before the half. Big momentum swing here possibly. Indiana 14, Penn State 14.

2:02 left in 2Q: TOUCHDOWN PENN STATE

On 3rd-and-short near the goal line, Nick Singleton punches it in, stretching the ball across the goal line. Hoosiers made the Nittany Lions work for that one. Indiana 14, Penn State 14.

7:06 left in 2Q: Hoosiers come up an inch short

IU goes for it on fourth down around midfield, but the snap is botched. Brendan Sorsby picks it up and finds Trent Howland, but the IU running back gets tackled inches shy of the first-down marker. Indiana 14, Penn State 7.

10:16 left in 2Q: Another defensive stop for IU

Penn State's offense hurt by a holding penalty and a 51-yard field goal is missed. Indiana 14, Penn State 7.

13:26 left in 2Q: TOUCHDOWN INDIANA

Penn State blows a coverage, and Brendan Sorsby hits Donaven McCulley for a 69-yard score. Wowza. Sorsby is is averaging 54 yards per completion so far. Indiana 14, Penn State 7.

END 1Q: Indiana 7, Penn State 7.

An illegal block in the back wipes out a long Penn State punt return for a touchdown. Bullet dodged for the Hoosiers. Indiana 7, Penn State 7.

1:37 left in 1Q: Penn State cashes in

Drew Allar finds Khalil Dinkins for a 9-yard touchdown on 4th-and-1. Some good work by the Hoosiers' defense but the short field off the muffed punt didn't do them any favors. Indiana 7, Penn State 7.

5:58 left in 1Q: IU muffs punt

Jaylin Lucas isn't back returning punts, and Cam Jordan muffs it after IU's defense comes up with another stop. Nittany Lions recover at IU's 32-yard line. Indiana 7, Penn State 0.

7:37 left in 1Q: TOUCHDOWN INDIANA.

Throwing in the shadow of his own end zone, Brendan Sorsby hits DeQuece Carter in stride, and he outraces the Nittany Lions and tip-toes the sideline for a 90-yard touchdown. Wow. Happy Valley is in silenced shock. Indiana 7, Penn State 0.

8:59 left in 1Q: James Evans kicks a 64-yard (!) punt

Two false start penalties, one to start the drive and one on the punt formation, torpedoes Hoosiers' drive. James Evans kicks out of his end zone and booms a 64-yard punt to give IU some breathing room. Clutch kick. Indiana 0, Penn State 0.

10:34 left in 1Q: Hoosiers force a punt

After a three-and-out on IU's first offensive possession, the defense stands tall to force a Penn State punt instead of an attempt at a 4th-and-short. That's the good news. Bad news, IU is pinned back inside its own 10-yard line.

We may get a first look at Dexter Williams today.

Kickoff: Indiana 0, Penn State 0

Nittany Lions kick off for a touchback, and we're underway with Brendan Sorsby under center for IU.
