Indiana football has strong second half but loses to Louisville at Lucas Oil Stadium 21-14

The Indiana football team is 1-1 this season after a 41-7 victory over Indiana State last week.

While Brendan Sorsby started against Ohio State, Tayven Jackson, who got the start against ISU, separated himself this past week when he was named IU's No. 1 quarterback. Today Indiana will play Louisville (2-0), which is coached by former Purdue coach Jeff Brohm, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Speaking of the Boilermakers, Louisville is led by former Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer. IU last played at Lucas Oil Stadium in 2019, when Michael Penix Jr. powered a 34-24 win over Ball State.

This game against the Cardinals was meant to kick off a three-year series, but actually, it will be the only game played between the two schools. IU previously signaled its intent to call off a 2025 home game vs. Louisville, as reported by the Bloomington Herald-Times.

This past week, IU withdrew from a scheduled 2024 road game against Louisville. The cancellation affecting next season will come with a $1 million penalty. It falls within a two-year window requiring "the canceling party" to pay for the inconvenience, according to the series contract.

Indiana intends to add a home game, likely against an FCS opponent, in 2024. The revenue from the new game is expected to cover the cancellation penalty.

Insider: Impressive third quarter isn't enough for IU after limp first-half in 21-14 loss

Final: Louisville 21, Indiana 14

Indiana had quite the comeback and was 1 1/2 feet away from either tying things up and even taking the lead. But it wasn't to be after Louisville got a couple of crucial first downs with a little more than 4 minutes left.

Tayven Jackson completed 24 of 24 pass attempts for 299 yards. Jaylin Lucas had 10 receptions for 98 yards. The running game, however, wasn't much of a factor as five players rushed 27 times for 58 yards.

Aaron Casey led the way for the defense with 10 total tackles, 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.

:57 left 4Q: Louisville gets crucial first downs in its own territory

At its own 1-yard line, Jack Plummer ran for 13 yards to get a much-needed first down. Indiana's defense couldn't stop Louisville from getting several first downs and the Cardinals will run out the clock on this one.

4:38 left 4Q: Indiana gets stopped at Louisville's goal line

Tayven Jackson threw a beautiful 41-yard pass to Cam Camper that was perfectly placed. The drive began at Indiana's 10-yard line. Louisville was called for pass interference when Jackson targeted Camper in the end zone. That put the ball in the 5-yard line, but the Hoosiers were then called for a false start.

A couple of plays later on 3rd down and goal, Jackson ran to the right pylon, dove and was marked down at the 2-yard line. After a review, the ball was placed at the 1 1/2-foot line, according to the head official.

On 4th and goal, Indiana running back Josh Henderson was stuffed at the goal line. Louisville will take over.

End of 3Q: Louisville 21, Indiana 14

We've got a game in Indianapolis. There are still some small mistakes being made, but IU is looking much better in the second half than they did in the first. Tayven Jackson now has 240 yards passing (21 for 29). Jaylin Lucas has 9 receptions for 88 yards.

:55 left 3Q: Indiana comes roaring back with another TD

Indiana had a really impressive drive that lasted 97 yards (!!!) and 13 plays. Tayven Jackson completed several big plays on that drive, including a 24-yard pass to Bradley Archer to get IU to Louisville's 13-yard line. A Josh Henderson 2-yard touchdown run topped off the drive.

8:22 left 3Q: Indiana gets its first turnover of the game

Louisville nearly had another huge play, but this time around Indiana got an interception. Jack Plummer threw deep down the field into double coverage. The Cardinal receiver had it at first but it bounced out and Phillip Dunnam snagged his second interception of the season.

13:42 left 3Q: Indiana begins half with a bang

What a way to start the second half for the Hoosiers. IU surprised Louisville with an onside kick, which the Hoosiers recovered.

After that big play, Tayven Jackson connected with Jaylin Lucas for a 21-yard pass. Two plays later, Jackson found Lucas again for a 30-yard touchdown.

Halftime: Louisville 21, Indiana 0

Indiana showed some promise on both sides of the ball, but Louisville's big-play potential has been too much for the Hoosiers. Tayven Jackson has completed 11 of his 15 pass attempts for 86 yards. Jaylin Lucas has 6 receptions for 31 yards.

On defense, Louis Moore leads the way with 7 total tackles. Noah Pierce and Aaron Casey have 5 tackles each.

1:52 left 2Q: Louisville adds another rushing touchdown

It's now a 3-touchdown lead in Indy. Jawhar Jordan scored on a 25-yard run to extend Louisville's lead before halftime. Jordan ran the ball 4 times during that 7-play drive that went 69 yards.

6:33 left 2Q: Indiana offensive lineman Max Longman injured

Things keep getting worse for the Hoosiers. On 1st and 10, there was a bad snap and Tayven Jackson had to hop on the ball for a loss of 13 yards.

Max Longman was being treated on the field by the medical staff after the play.

7:44 left 2Q: Louisville extends its lead with another TD

Louisville's running game wore down Indiana's defense on that drive. Maurice Turner capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Turner, along with Isaac Guerendo, ran the ball well during that span.

Indiana's defense forced several 3rd downs, but Louisville kept converting.

Louisville 14, Indiana 0

End of 1Q: Louisville 7, Indiana 0

Indiana looks decent on offense, but Tayven Jackson has overthrown multiple receivers. If he gets that under control, IU should be in decent shape.

2:34 left 1Q: Louisville scores first at Tayven Jackson interception

A promising drive by Indiana ended with Tayven Jackson tossing a high pass that was tipped by the receiver but picked off by the Louisville defense.

Louisville took over on its own 15-yard line and threw an incompletion to start the drive. The next play Jack Plummer found Jamari Thrash for an 85-yard score. Thrash is hurting the Hoosiers so far.

6:33 left 1Q: Louisville drives down the field after big play but misses FG

While Louisville drove the ball down the field (10 plays for 71 yards), the Indiana defense held strong when it mattered most. Cardinals kicker Brock Travelstead missed a 38-yard field goal try to cap off the drive.

Earlier in the drive on 3rd and 6, Louisville quarterback Jack Plummer tossed a 43-yard pass to Jamari Thrash. But the IU defense didn't allow much after that. Two plays later, Aaron Casey sacked Plummer for a 3-yard loss.

11:00 left 1Q: Indiana moves the ball but ultimately punts

It was an encouraging first drive for the Hoosiers but it ultimately ended in a punt. The drive lasted 7 plays and went 32 yards.

Tayven Jackson completed 2 of 3 passes for 14 yards. Jaylin Lucas had 2 carries for 12 yards.

IU injury update

IU got good and bad news out of its weekly availability report Saturday morning. Clemson transfer wide receiver E.J. Williams (2 catches, 29 yards) is out for the Hoosiers’ game against Louisville. But Cam Camper, Indiana’s leading receiver across the last two seasons, is active, after missing the second half of last week’s win over Indiana State through an unspecified injury.
