Ankeny's Belding edges Johnston's Anglo, wins 4A boys 400

Jackson Belding held off a hard-charing Jashua Anglo to win the Class 4A boys 400-meter dash on Thursday at Drake Stadium.

Belding, a junior for Ankeny, won the third heat, and ultimately the state title, with a time of 47.94 seconds. He beat out Anglo, a sophomore for Johnston, who finished second in 48.13. Bettendorf's Calvin Curcija finished third in 48.53, followed by Mason City's James Fingalsen (48.92) and Linn-Mar's Tayden Ferguson (49.32).

Class 1A Boys 400: Mount Ayr's Ryce Reynolds won the boys 400 in 1A in 48.21 seconds, beating Lawton-Bronson's Theo Moseman (second in 48.87) and George-Little Rock's Isaiah Johnson (third in 48.88).

Norwalk's Claire Farrell reclaims 4A girls 400-meter dash

Claire Farrell kicked off her week at the state track meet with a state title on Thursday in the 400-meter dash.

Farrell, the speedy senior from Norwalk, won the event in 55.62 seconds, beating the Swartzendruber twins from Cedar Rapids Kennedy (Addison finished second in 56.51; Sidney third in 56.79). Bettendorf's Maya Williams (57.61) and Johnston's Jayce Blanchard (57.62) finished 4th-5th.

Farrell, a Kansas recruit, is now a two-time state champion in the 400. She previously won in 2021. Farrell will be back in action later this week, too, having qualified for the finals in both the 100- and 200-meter dash. Those finals will be contested Saturday.

Class 1A Girls 400: Nashua-Plainfield's Kadence Huck won the 1A 400-meter dash in 55.94, beating GTRA's Myla Murphy (58.54) and AGWSR's Brynn Smith (58.62).

Waukee's Josie Moreland wins second-straight 4A high jump title

Josie Moreland claimed her second-straight Class 4A girls high jump title on Thursday, winning a tiebreaker over Ankeny's Reagan Hanfelt. Both girls cleared 5-foot-5 and failed to clear 5-foot-7. Because Moreland cleared 5-5 on her first attempt and Hanfelt needed a second try, Moreland won gold.

As such, Moreland is now a two-time state champ — and Waukee has won the last four Class 4A girls high jump state titles. Layanna Green won the crown in both 2019 and 2021, and now Moreland has won the last two years. Not bad.

Behind Moreland and Hanfelt, Ankeny's Jayla Williams finished third after clearing 5-4. Moreland won the individual title, but the Hawks came away with 14 total team points thanks to Hanfelt and Williams finishing 2nd-3rd.

Iowa City High boys 4x800 relay sets new all-time record

Thursday's Class 4A 4x800-meter relay final featured both a new all-time state record as well as two of the fastest times in the country so far this season.

The Iowa City High foursome of Ammon Smith, Ayman Noreldaim, Ford Washburn, and Truman Thompson set a new all-time state record in the 4x800 relay, clocking a blistering 7:37.66 to win the Class 4A state title.

The 7:37.66, one, tops the old state record of 7:41.43, set by Ames in 2015; and two, is also the second-fastest outdoor time nationally in the 4x800 by a high school team this year.

Iowa City High edged Johnston, who finished second in 7:38.12, which also topped the old all-time mark by Ames and is currently the third-fastest outdoor time nationally. The Dragons ran Aidan O'Connor, Alex Wear, Brayden Picken, and Carson Lane for a runner-up finish. Dowling finished third in 7:49.99.

  • Class 4A Girls 4x800: The Ankeny foursome of Sophie Loeffler, Reagan Prendergast, Drew Beason, and Alli Macke won the 4A girls 4x800 in 9:17.69. It marks the first time in school history that Ankeny won this relay event. The Hawks beat Southeast Polk, the runners-up in 9:18.66.

  • Class 1A Boys 4x800: Earlham claimed the 1A boys 4x800 in 8:11.05, beating second-place St. Albert (8:12.85) and third-place Wapsie Valley (8:14.47).

  • Class 1A Girls 4x800: South Winneshiek handily won the 1A girls 4x800 in 9:41.43, beating second-place AGWSR (9:48.60) and third-place St. Albert (9:50.30).

Waukee NW's Morrison tops Linn-Mar's Roskop in Class 4A boys discus

Lucas Morrison launched a discus toss of 183 feet, 1 inch on his fourth attempt, which was enough to overtake Linn-Mar's Keaton Roskop and win the Class 4A boys discus title on Thursday.

Morrison, a senior for Waukee Northwest, sat second after his second attempt went 179. Roskop, meanwhile, held the lead after his first throw went 181-05. They were the only two throwers to clear 180 feet during the 4A competition.

As Roskop fouled out his second, third, and fourth attempts, Morrison connected on the winning toss in his fourth try, which held up as the winner. Cedar Rapids Prairie's Tate Joens finished third with a long throw of 170-11.

Class 1A Boys Shot: Akron-Westfield's Ian Blowe won the 1A boys shot put competition with a long throw of 55-11.5. He beat Wapello's Ryan McDonough, the runner-up with a long throw of 53-05.75.

Linn-Mar's Jackson wins thrilling Class 4A boys high jump competition

In a star-studded Class 4A high jump competition, it was Linn-Mar's TJ Jackson who emerged victorious over Iowa City High's Matt Schaeckenbach and Cedar Falls' Jacob Kieler on Thursday at Drake Stadium — thanks to a tiebreaker.

Jackson and Schaeckenbach both cleared 6-foot-11 on their third attempts, then failed to clear 7-1. As such, the result was decided via tiebreaker. Both guys cleared 6-9 on their second tries, but Jackson cleared 6-7 on his first attempt, while Schaeckenbach cleared it on his second attempt, giving the gold to Jackson.

Kieler, the Drake Relays champ, had the inside track to add a state title to his senior season after he cleared both 6-7 and 6-9 on his first attempts, but he failed to clear 6-11 to match Jackson and Schaeckenberg, solidifying his third-place finish. Davenport West's Idris Thomas, who also cleared 6-9, finished fourth.

Linn-Mar's TJ Jackson won the Class 4A boys high jump competition on Thursday at Drake Stadium.

Dowling's talented distance-running senior Jackson Heidesch won his second Class 4A 3200-meter state title on Thursday morning, adding to his 2021 state title. Heidesch clocked a 9:06.86 to beat Iowa City High's Ford Washburn (9:13.16) and Ankeny's Ethan Zuber (9:14.10).

Heidesch climbed into the lead after the fourth lap and never looked back, running his final three laps in 65, 61, and 63 seconds to pull away from Washburn, who won this event last year in 9:05.35. Pleasant Valley's Luke Knepp (9:15.20) and Hempstead's John Maloney (9:16.68) finished 4th-5th.

Dowling Catholic's Jackson Heidesch won the Class 4A boys 3200-meter run on Thursday morning at Drake Stadium.

Dorenkamp held off Des Moines Roosevelt's Adrienne Buettner-Cable, who finished second in 9:53.14. The senior ran even with Dorenkamp through the first 200 meters, but couldn't make up ground after Dorenkamp put distance between them during the first half of the race.

Behind Dorenkamp and Buettner-Cable, Pleasant Valley's Lydia Sommer (10:00.94), Johnston's Olivia Verde (10:01.70), and Ames' Marley Turk (10:03.21) finished 3rd-4th-5th.

Valley's Addison Dorenkamp is now a two-time Class 4A state champ in the girls 3000 after winning the event again on Thursday morning at Drake Stadium.
