Lincoln-Sudbury two-sport star Jake Haarde commits to Penn State University for baseball

A big arm is headed for the Big Ten.

Lincoln-Sudbury senior Jake Haarde committed to play baseball at Penn State on Tuesday.

"I am excited and very thankful to announce that I am continuing my academic and athletic career at Penn State," he wrote.

Haarde thanked his coaches and family both with Lincoln-Sudbury and his travel teams, as well as the Nittany Lions' staff for the opportunity. Penn State recently hired long time Boston College coach Mike Gambino after he spent 13 years at his alma mater in Chestnut Hill.

As a junior, Haarde hit .420 and scored a Dual-County Thorpe League-leading 24 runs with 18 stolen bases. The DCL All-League player drove in 15 runs, tied for fourth in the league.

Lincoln-Sudbury reached the Division 1 Round of 16 in the spring after compiling a 12-10 record in the regular season.

Haarde becomes at least the fourth area athlete in recent months to commit to a Division I college program. Franklin's Austin Campbell is on his way to UMass, while his Panthers teammate Henry DiGiorgio will play at Northeastern. Nipmuc's Anthony Ruggiero will also be a Husky.
