Leading the pack: A look at the leaders in Lenawee County volleyball
With the MHSAA volleyball playoffs a few weeks away, here's where the 12 Lenawee County programs sit as all the teams meet Saturday at Adrian High School for the county tournament and prepare for the postseason.
Seven programs are at .500 or better with Lenawee Christian, Madison, Addison, Tecumseh, Adrian, Clinton and Onsted all enjoying solid seasons.
Of the group, only LCS is ranked in the MIVCA poll with LCS sitting at third in Division 4 and is expected to move up soon after beating No. 1 Mendon and No. 5 Hillsdale Academy last weekend at the Cougars' home quad.
LCS is hitting its stride as the Cougars have played well all season, but recently added Hannah Baker as she recovered from knee injury during basketball season last year.
Gabby Bryja has been directing the group from the setter position with 565 assists this season. Stepping up in Baker's absences has been Sophie Samonek (210 kills) and Selah Clymer (90 kills), while Baker already has 132.
Ally Day leads LCS with digs (241) while Bryja has 196.
LCS is unbeaten in its first year in the Tri-County Conference as the Cougars took the place of Madison, which is unbeaten in its first season in the LCAA.
The Trojans are guided by Tatum Wilson who is third in the county in kills (297), fifth in aces (42) and first in blocks (80). Lily Pharion (167) and Elizabeth Hacker (162) has provided depth behind Wilson.
Madison has the county leader in assists as setter Jillian Kendrick has 794 this season to go along with 47 aces (second in the county). The leader in the county in aces is Veronica Flores with 52, she is also the leader in digs with 535 while Caylan Sower is fifth in digs (376).
The leader on the attack is Addison's Molly Brown, who is leading the Panthers to a fantastic season.
Brown has 367 kills and is ninth in digs (253) and aces (38). It isn't all Brown for Addison has Laci Patterson 196 kills (sixth) while Izzy Durkee has 142 kills and 222 digs.
Guiding Addison has been Lexi Patterson with 618 assists (second).
Tecumseh is unbeaten in the SEC White while Adrian has one-loss (to Tecumseh) as both lead the conference standings.
Tecumseh is leading by its big duo up front in Emma Eldred and Alli Zajac. Eldred has 302 kills (second) while Zajac has 183 kills (seventh) and Lily Hammond is fifth in assists (541).
The Maples are led by Liv McKenzie with 600 assists (third) while Lauren Fraser is fourth in kills (232), Ella Salenbien is tenth (166) and Allison Shaw has 145. Halei Lefever is third in aces (46) while Fraser is fourth (43).
Other locals athletes putting up strong numbers are Blissfield's Maycie Valasek with 433 digs (second) while Hudson's Jozlyn Weber is third (429) and another Royal, Addison Martinez, is fourth in digs (401).
Clinton's Nalani Schanz is tied for fifth in aces (42), seventh in assists (277) and has 159 digs.
Sand Creek's Lainey Johnston (54) and Zoe Rorick (49) and fourth and fifth in blocks.
