LCU ties Colorado Mesa in non-conference finale

Julie Shahi scored a tying goal in the 72nd minute and Abby Kone made three saves late as Lubbock Christian University salvaged a 2-2 tie at home Saturday in its non-conference finale with Colorado Mesa.

Shahi's unassisted goal came only 63 seconds after Colorado Mesa (2-3-1) took a 2-1 lead when Haley Klasner finished off a pass from Lila Dere.

Mikayla Eccher put one past Kone in the fifth minute, and Mesa's 1-0 lead stood up until Stephanie McClurg evened it in the 60th minute with her third goal of the season. Graycen Rasmussen headed Madison Mayben's free kick into the box, and McClurg knocked it home.

Mesa outshot LCU 29-14, including 15-7 in shots on goal. Kone made 13 saves, the most by an LCU goalkeeper Hannah Wise made 14 in a 2018 match against Southwestern Oklahoma State.

LCU (3-0-3) opens Lone Star Conference play against UT-Permian Basin at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Odessa.

Wayland football

PLAINVIEW — Naaji Gadsden ran for three touchdowns and Bryan Ponder threw for two as Wayland Baptist opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a 37-14 win over Lyon on Saturday at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium.

The Pioneers (1-1, 1-0) scored 23 points in the second quarter to take a 30-7 halftime lead over the Scots (1-2, 1-1).

Gadsden scored Wayland’s first two TDs on runs of 3 and 8 yards, the Scots scoring in between. The Pioneers made it 21-7 when Dylan Sterling, crossing the end zone, pulled down a 13-yard pass from Ponder.

After a three-and-out, WBU scored on the next play when Ponder threw on the run and hit Dashawn McCubbins on a 30-yard throw. McCubbins turned upfield and completed a 71-yard touchdown at 1:57 before halftime.

LCU volleyball

SAN ANGELO — Sam Rodgers and Kaila Garnett registered 15 and 13 kills, respectively, and Angelo State came back to beat Lubbock Christian University 17-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-19 on Saturday's last day of the Lone Star Conference Crossover matches.

LCU (4-7) finished winless in three matches at the Junell Center and has lost four of its past five.

Marina Sanchez had 13 blocks and seven kills for Angelo State (4-8), and Rodgers had eight blocks.

LCU got seven kills apiece from Aaliyah Gray and Payton Murray and six from Sage Chain.

On Saturday, No. 13 West Texas A&M swept the Lady Chaps 25-19, 25-21, 25-22 behind 17 kills from Torrey Miller.

LCU got nine kills from Kiana Fallaha and eight apiece from Gray and Chain.

PUEBLO, Colo. — Ricardo Schroeder scored in the 44th minute and Colorado State-Pueblo edged Lubbock Christian University 1-0 Friday night, holding the Chaps to three shots and none in the final 61 minutes.
