Last football head coaching position filled as Bovina promotes Ramiro Carmona

In today's age, you can always expect a relatively busy coaching carousel at the end of each school year. But 2023 has been busier than usual. Anytime it looks like it's over, more changes come.

For now, though, it truly seems like the cycle is coming to an end...knock on wood.

The final open head football coach position in the Panhandle has been filled as Bovina has promoted defensive coordinator Ramiro Carmona to head coach. He replaces Coby Emery, who resigned a few months ago. Track coach Eric Monte is the new Athletic Director.

This year has seen 15 head coaching changes in the Panhandle in football alone. The magnitude of some of the changes has been stunning as well with long-time coaches such as Palo Duro's Jeff Evans (boys basketball) and Randall's Corey Hamilton (baseball) retiring from the profession. Massive local names have switched to other local schools as well such as Caprock's Dan Sherwood heading over to Randall.

It's been almost impossible to calculate the total number of coaching changes on an overall scale, but at this time it appears there's only one opening left in the area after the following moves have been made in the recent weeks. :

  • Miami has hired Rachel Stewart to be its next girls basketball coach. She was previously an assistant at Childress and Wheeler.

  • Groom has promoted Joe Riley to girls basketball coach following Betsy Baughman's resignation to take a position at Austin Middle School.

  • Hereford has hired Marcus McLean as its new head golf coach. This will be McLean's first coaching position.

  • Childress has hired Charlsi Bozeman as its new cross country coach.

  • Borger has hired Sydney Greeson as its new softball coach. A graduate of Amarillo High, she won a national championship as player at West Texas A&M. This will be her first coaching job.

  • It's believed that the last remaining open position in the area is at Clarendon. The Broncos are still looking for a new baseball coach to replace Yancy Malloy, who departed to take an assistant job at Tascosa.
