Larry French column: Junior bowler Jerzak breaking barriers at Corning's Crystal Lanes

It turned out to be quite the week for Madilyn Jerzak at Crystal Lanes as she ventured into some new territory in her young bowling career.

While competing in the CIBA Jr./Sr. Mixed League, Madilyn registered her first sanctioned 600 series ever in junior league action. After opening with a 183 game, she tacked on scores of 222 and 202 for a 607 series. This first ever six in league action came on the heels of her first ever 600 while competing at the high school level. Three days prior to her league 600, Madilyn posted a 608 series for Horseheads High School in a match versus the Corning bowling squad. A couple of nice early Christmas presents for this young lady.

While on the subject of breaking into new bowling territory, for the second week in a row, Oliver Sturdevant, from the Sturdevant bowling family, tossed a personal best while competing in the CIBA Bantam/Prep Mixed League. After rolling a 420 series last week, Oliver wasted little time topping that when he registered a 452 series in the same league this week. Connor Darrow also topped four with a 419 series.

And for a little sugar on top for the youngsters, Corban Breckenridge notched a season-best game in the CIBA Bumper League with a 116 effort.

Getting to the older kids in the junior program, there was yet another 700 thrown by a youngster in the CIBA Jr./Sr. Mixed League. And nearly a second one.

Zachery Sturdevant (yeah of the family mentioned above), who has the only 800 for the juniors this year, was at the top of the heap again with his sixth 700, a 731 set on games of 226, 246 and 259. Cameron Kennedy came close to his eighth 700 of the year but came up a couple pins short with a 698 series on games of 269, 207 and 222. In the same league, Camryn Stefanini tossed a 636 set while Zachery Kathan came away with a 614.

Sands, Dobson toss 300s

We tacked on a couple more perfect games to the season honor roll when Dwight Sands and Nick Dobson turned the trick on consecutive nights. Dwight was first when he converted the first 12 shots of the night in the pocket into strikes in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League. The next night, Nick Dobson closed out the weekly session of the Tire World of Corning Men’s League with a dozen strikes for his second 300 game of the season to finish with a 721 series.

Joey’s League was also the scene of the best series of the week. Mike Wise notched weekly scoring honors when he blasted a 767 series on games of 233, 277 and 257. He was just ahead of Nate Johnson and his 762 set that featured a 289 game and Jeff Crawford’s 719 series.

There was also a lot of 700 action in the Tire World League. With that perfect game as the highlight, there were another half-dozen guys over seven. Adam Madigan led that parade with a 745 series that featured a 268 game while Al Farr pitched a 279 on his way to a 726. Nick’s 721 set was matched by Neil Stevenson while Carl Packard blasted a 720. Teammates Mike Brewster and Mike Kosinski closed the sevens with 709 and 703 respectively.

Mike Kosinski then went on a rampage in the Hatfield Real Estate League with a 759 series. After opening with a 216 game, Mike turned up the heat and collected games of 265 and 278 for his 759. Teammates Scott Bradley and Jamie Kennedy joined him with scores of 718 and 707. Max Dunning capped a 730 with games of 258 and 266 while Derik Lisi rode a 278 opener to a 708 series. Teammates Paul Brion and Jim Sjoblom capped the seven shooting with 713 and 701 respectively.

In other men’s league action, Josh Ballance paced the Ruth Briggs Memorial Mixed League with a 732 that featured a 288 game while Rick Stewart topped the Addison Men’s League with a 710 and Jake Blanford continued his hot streak topping the Jubilee Foods Mixed League with a 701 series.

Gennosa, Farr top 700

It’s been a while since we had two ladies reach 700 in the same week, but Anita Gennosa and Heather Farr ended that streak when they both topped seven this week.

Anita took home scoring honors for the ladies this week with her performance in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League. She squeezed a 208 middle game with scores of 256 and 257 for a 721 series. It’s the third 700 of the season for Anita. Heather climbed the scoring ladder on her way to a 706 series in the Giardina Building & Remodeling Ladies League. She built that series with games of 205, 232 and 269 in that order for her first seven of the season.

There were also four ladies over six in the Giardina League. Deon Frost paced this quartet when she put together games of 222, 234 and 225 for a 681 series and teammate Anita Gennosa capped a 662 set with a 277 game. Cheryl Rice added a 649 series and Andrea Bauman posted a 609 total.

Samantha Blanford continued her hot streak when she put together games of 250, 222 and 203 for a 675 series to pace the ladies in the Jubilee Foods Mixed League. In the same league, Kim Chimileski capped a 600 with a 240 game. In other ladies action, Heather Farr topped the Gabe’s Grille Ladies League with a 654 while Hailey Blencowe paced the Savona Storage Ladies with a 635 set and Deon Frost added a 608 in Joey’s Mixed League.

Pierce, Stermer lead seniors

Don Pierce collected senior scoring honors when he topped the Go-Getters Senior Mixed with a 720 series. Don opened the session with games of 278 and 267 before running out of gas in game three, but he had plenty of petrol left in the tank for his 720. You can figure out game three.

For the seventh time this season, John Stermer topped seven in the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League. This week he got off to a running start with a 279 game and added scores of 214 and 224 for a 717 series. There were also seven fellas in this league over six. John Olson led that parade with a 661 while Mike Goltry wasn’t far back at the 657 mark which was one stick ahead of Bruce Stanton’s 656. Ken Crozier came up with a 646 while Tim DeGraw carded a 637 and Rodger Keenan kicked off a 628 with a 268 game. Gary Gustin closed the sixes with a 628 series.

John Olson overcame a struggle of a first game in the Striking Seniors Mixed League with games of 235 and 279 to finish with a 684 series. In the same league, Gary Gustin rolled a 612 while Rich Granger tossed a 611. Dan Jones garnered to only other senior six when he paced the Sunshiner’s Mixed League with a 657 series.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and here’s wishing everyone a Happy New Year.
