LaMelo Ball, Evan Mobley headline NBA's Rising Stars event

NBA assistant coaches shared their verdict on Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball on Tuesday. Turns out, he's pretty good. Ball and Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Evan Mobley will headline the NBA's Rising Stars event during All-Star weekend.

Ball, who won the Rookie of the Year award last season, was selected to take part in the Rising Star festivities. He'll be joined by other second-year players like Saddiq Bey, Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton. All four of those players received votes in last year's Rookie of the Year voting.

The other second-year players selected to take part in the Rising Stars event include Precious Achiuwa, Cole Anthony, Desmond Bane, Tyrese Maxey, Jaden McDaniels, Isaac Okoro, Isaiah Stewart and Jae'Sean Tate.

Ball spoke to TNT about his selection, saying he models his game after ... himself.

Ball also said he took inspiration from Jamal Crawford and Penny Hardaway.

On the rookie side, Scottie Barnes and Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green and Mobley are among the biggest names to get the call. Those four players were the top-4 picks in the 2021 NBA draft.

The other rookies selected for the event include Ayo Dosunmu, Chris Duarte, Josh Giddey, Herbert Jones, Davion Mitchell, Alperen Sengun, Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner. All 12 of those players — except Dosunmu and Jones — were selected in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft.

That group will be joined by four players from the G League: MaJon Beauchamp, Dyson Daniels, Jaden Hardy and Scoot Henderson

How does the NBA's Rising Stars event work?

The NBA's Rising Stars event will look different this season. The event will feature 28 players selected by NBA assistant coaches. Those players will be separated into four teams consisting of seven players. Those teams will then play each other in a tournament.

The Rising Stars event will take place Feb. 18.
