What to know ahead of this weekend's Avera Race Against Cancer

The 37th annnual Avera Race Against Cancer is this Saturday in southeastern Sioux Falls near the Avera McKennan Fitness Center, and the Sioux Falls Police Department is reminding the public about road closures throughout the morning of the event.

The race is expected to start with a warm-up at about 7:45 a.m. as runners take their marks at 8 a.m., but road closures begin at 7 a.m.

What will the weather be like for race day?

There's no sign of rain in sight for the weekend, according to the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls. Expect sunny skies, with a high near 77 degrees and winds of 5 to 10 mph, the NWS website states.

How will the event unfold?

Shuttle buses for the race begin running as early as 6 a.m., and the event itself is expected to wrap up by about 10:30 a.m., with some road closures potentially ending sooner.

The day's schedule is as follows:

  • 6 a.m. - Shuttle buses start

  • 7 a.m. - Streets close around the Avera McKennan Fitness Center

  • 7:15 a.m. - Survivor photo outside of LeJeune Survivor Pavilion

  • 7:25 a.m. - Welcome prayer from Sr. Mary Thomas

  • 7:30 a.m. - Participants move to front stage for performances and warm-ups

  • 7:35 a.m. - "Star-Spangled Banner" performed by The6Four

  • 7:40 a.m. - "Survivor Song" performed by The6Four

  • 7:45 a.m. - Warm-up with Jackie Haggar-Tuschen

  • 8 a.m. - 10K Run starts

  • 8:10 a.m. - 5K Run starts

  • 8:20 a.m. - 3-mile and 1.5-mile walks start

  • 8:30 a.m. - Survivor door prize winners announced

  • 10 a.m. - Food Expo closes

What roads will be closed?

Closures include the following five areas, according to the police department: • Southeastern Avenue from 49th Street to Klondike Trail• 41st Street from Southeastern to Bahnson Avenue• Bahnson Avenue from 33rd Street to 49th Street• 33rd Street/Old Orchard Trail from Bahnson Avenue to Southeastern Avenue• 49th Street from Spencer Boulevard to Bahnson Avenue

"Motorists are encouraged to drive with care in this area during the race," the department stated on social media. "Every effort will be made to accommodate residents that need to leave or enter the closed areas."
