Kingsville, Tuloso-Midway clash plus updated high school football power rankings

Several games were ruled no contest last week due to inclement weather that rolled through the Coastal Bend, but what was seen gave us new insights to many teams across the area. District play starts in various districts across the region. Two greatly improved teams clash in an under-the-radar Game of the Week on Friday as Tuloso-Midway and Kingsville meet, both carrying postseason hopes

GAME OF THE WEEK

Kingsville at Tuloso-Midway

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Warrior Stadium

Records: Kingsville 2-2, Tuloso-Midway 4-0

Last week: London 17, Kingsville 13; Tuloso-Midway 40, West Oso 0

What to know — Kingsville with Ruben Garcia in his first season leading the Brahmas, was seconds away from a 3-1 start going into District 16-4A Division I play, but a late London touchdown proved to be the game-winner. The Brahmas have already matched their best win total over the last four seasons (2) behind playmakers Dylon Everett, Terrell Jackson, Donovan Bencze and Jasiah Rivera. Tuloso-Midway has the No. 2 scoring defense in the state in Class 4A Division I (4 points a game) and earned its second shutout of the season last week against West Oso. Alex Olivarez, Jayden Kemp and Jeremiah Garza are the leaders of the Warriors stout D.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL POWER RANKINGS

Week 4

CLASS 4A/5A

1. Miller Buccaneers (3-0)

The Bucs begin the District 14-5A Division I season with aspirations of winning the team's first district title since 2019.

2. Calallen Wildcats (2-1)

The Wildcats have figured things out and were in a battle with Cuero when the sky opened on Friday.

3. Gregory-Portland Wildcats (3-1)

Last week's slow start combined with a rough outing in Boerne have the Wildcats looking for answers after the defense was dominating the first two weeks.

4. Flour Bluff Hornets (1-2)

Flour Bluff had a strong first quarter through the air against Alice and played better defensively against the Coyotes before the game was halted.

5. Veterans Memorial Eagles (2-1)

The Eagles have had two weeks to stew on a loss in El Campo to end the season and again eye the district crown starting this week.

6. Alice Coyotes (2-1)

The Coyotes took an early punch from the Hornets on Friday, but looked to have withstood the barrage and were starting to click before the game was called.

7. Beeville Trojans (4-0)

Beeville made perhaps the biggest statement of the night with a 24-21 road win at state-ranked Somerset to remain undefeated and have another big test with Cuero this week.

8. Ingleside Mustangs (4-0)

For the first time this season, Ingleside had to scrap, but found a way to win despite being down in the second half against Rio Hondo.

9. Carroll Tigers (2-1)

The Tigers enter district play with the same record as the 2022 season. Can the Tigers snag one of four playoff spots out of District 14-5A Division I.

10. Tuloso-Midway Warriors (4-0)

The Warriors stayed perfect and again rode an impressive defensive effort for their fourth straight win.

CLASS 2A/3A

1. Refugio Bobcats (3-1)

Bobcats earned a forfeit win against Bishop and will begin district play Friday.

2. San Diego Vaqueros (3-0)

The Vaqueros were leading Odem when the weather wiped out the remainder of the game.

3. London Pirates (3-1)

The Pirates snared a last-second win on the road against Kingsville in a defensive contest.

4. Three Rivers Bulldogs (3-1)

The Bulldogs earned a road win at Banquete after QB Caden Soliz was named the Built Ford Tough Class 2A Texas High School Football Player of the Week.

5. Mathis Pirates (2-1)

Like many others, Mathis saw its contest against George West fall victim to the weather.
