Kills, digs and aces: Vote for IHSAA volleyball players of the week (Aug. 12-19)

Volleyball preview: Getting you ready for 2023 season
Here are the top performers from the past week.
Kynnadi Bell, Yorktown
Bell, a senior, has 132 assists in the four matches listed on MaxPreps. Her strong start is highlighted by a pair of 40-assist performances: 44 in a 3-1 win over Brebeuf and 42 in a four-set loss to Bellmont. She had 232 ball handling attempts with only two errors over those two matches. Bell also logged 31 digs.
Madison Brown, Noblesville
The sophomore setter opened her season with 40-plus assists in back-to-back matches. She logged 43 in a 3-1 win over North Central, then totaled 48 in a five-set triumph over Mt. Vernon. Brown also logged four aces, 20 digs and three solo blocks.
Macy Chafin, Southport
The senior setter cleared 1,000 career assists in the Cardinals' season opener, and was already up to 111 for the season entering the weekend (career total sits at 1,079). Chafin also had 33 digs, 21 blocks, 15 aces and 17 kills.

Kennedy Cherry, Hamilton Heights
The recent Western Kentucky commit recorded 58 receptions with only three errors and cleared double-digit digs four times through her first six matches (all Huskies sweeps). Cherry had 61 digs, seven aces and nine assists entering the weekend.

Cathryn Erwin, Lutheran
The Saints battled back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Scecina in five sets on Thursday, and Erwin played a critical role defensively, recording 24 digs and 50 receptions (seven errors). She also notched an assist and an ace. Erwin has 53 digs and six aces through three matches.
Izzy Masten, Tri-West
The sophomore had 73 kills and a .327 hit% through her first 15 sets with 42 digs, 10 aces, seven blocks and six assists. She's cleared 20 kills twice in her first four matches, first against Springs Valley (27), then against Danville (21).
Lauren Paska, Lapel
Paska is enjoying a strong start to her senior season, picking up 37 kills (.346 hit%), 12 aces and 18 digs through her first eight sets. The Indiana Tech commit had 23 kills and hit .321 in a five-set win over Frankton.

Sophia Poehlein, Zionsville
The senior Bentley University commit hit .404 with 23 kills in a five-set victory over Tri-West. She also notched an ace, eight digs and two blocks. Poehlein had 56 kills (.312 hit%), nine blocks and 55 digs through her first 20 sets.
MaryKate Scheumann, Belmont
The sophomore's opening week was highlighted by a 22-kill, 16-dig effort in a 3-1 victory over Yorktown. She finished with 58 kills and three blocks over four matches (14 sets), all Bellmont wins.
Mallory Short, Speedway
Two matches (seven sets) into her high school career and the freshman hitter's already accumulated 22 kills, 26 digs, an ace, two blocks and an assist. The Sparkplugs won both matches, sweeping Lebanon and taking out Cascade in four.
Kamryn Utley, Cathedral
Utley, a Lehigh commit, accumulated 133 assists entering the weekend, with five blocks (four solo), 39 digs, six aces and 15 kills. The Fighting Irish swept their first six opponents before falling to Assumption (Kentucky) in four sets on Saturday.
Ellen Zapp, Center Grove
The junior has 47 kills through her first 14 sets of the season with four blocks and seven digs. She had 14 kills and a .407 hitting percentage against New Castle on Saturday. Center Grove is 4-0 on the season with home matches vs. Cathedral and Plainfield upcoming.
