With a plethora of injuries decimating their receiving ranks this season, the Buffalo Bills appear down and out at the position. Marquise Goodwin will be the team’s first string receiver this week while Percy Harvin and Walter Powell are expected to compete for the second receiver position. With a such a problematic area now rearing it’s ugly head, it’s time for the Bills to take a risk.

Claiming Justin Hunter off waivers early in the season, Hunter has the size, experience, and skill needed to make a difference in the team’s extremely weak receiving corps. While Hunter hasn’t put up any sort of production this season, he also hasn’t had a chance to perform since he was released by the Titans.

He joined Miami off of waivers during the early part of the preseason, Hunter remained with the team through it’s first game at Seattle. Released, Hunter joined the Bills and has yet to really receive his chance. With Sammy Watkins unlikely to be full-game ready for this week’s contest, Hunter needs to be the man given his shot on offense.

For one thing, his size matches up really nicely with the rest of the receivers. Using Hunter as your big man threat down the field, you can position Marquise Goodwin as the speedster and Percy Harvin in the slot. The three would represent a nice mesh of different styles and would give Tyrod Taylor his pick of players to throw at.

At this point, what do you really have to lose. Walter Powell has been out for the last couple of weeks. Marquise Goodwin is only a speed threat making his short and intermediate ability non-existent. Percy Harvin was retired for the first half of the year. Everyone else listed on the depth chart is not a real option for starting at this point.

Should LeSean McCoy also struggle with his thumb or hamstring injuries in the future as well, throwing the football will become even more important. Finding out now if Hunter is a real option in the passing game would be a lot better than finding it out later with no Plan B.
