California wildfire takes aim at cultural symbol
As wildfires have blazed through the Mojave National Preserve from July to the opening days of August, two of the most iconic elements of the area have been at the forefront of the destructive path. The York Fire and Geology Fire combined to burn near 100,000 acres, including Joshua trees and other yucca varieties, with firefighters working to limit the destruction of the desert’s famous plant. So far, the York Fire is un 70% contained, with the overall blaze itself reaching the 100,000-acre mark.
