Jimmies give up late lead in 4-3 overtime tourney loss to Ohio

Mar. 19—MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — The University of Jamestown were one second away from moving on but unfortunately for them that one second came back to haunt them. The Jimmies gave up a goal with approximately one second to go in regulation in a 4-3 overtime loss to Ohio University on Sunday, March 19, in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ACHA National Championships at the NESC Rink.

The Jimmies (22-11) opened the scoring with 17:12 to go in the first period when the puck trickled onto the stick of Morgan Venne who slotted it home to make it 1-0. The Bobcats (29-5-2) tied the game up when John Mclaughlin batted the puck in to make it 1-1 with 8:14 to go in the opening period. The Jimmies retook the lead late in the period when Jordon Kromm buried a one-timer stick side past the Bobcats goalie Justin Damon to make it 2-1 with 47 seconds left in the period.

The Bobcats dominated the second period as they outshot the Jimmies 16-9, but Jimmies goalie Brandon Weare kept his team in the game. Midway through the period, Weare made an incredible save as he went across his crease and blocked an open net with his stick to keep the Jimmies in the lead. The Bobcats kept pushing from there though and with 5:16 to go in the second, Mclaughlin got his second of the day to tie the game up at two. Jimmies head coach Dean Stork said his team stopped back checking in the second period, which allowed the Bobcats to get back into the game.

The Jimmies took the lead back when Brad Fortin took a shot from the point that was tipped in by Kromm to push his team in front 3-2 with 11:42 to go in the game. The score stayed that way until the Bobcats pulled off a late miracle as there was a scramble in front and the Bobcats' Collin Felton managed to score with one second to go in the game to tie the game up at three. The refs initially waved it off but after reviewing it determined the puck crossed the line with time still on the clock. Stork said the refs did not say anything to him about the goal.

Early in the overtime, the Bobcats' Sam Turner took a shot through a screen that found its' way past Weare to give his team the 4-3 overtime win. It was the only shot that either team took in the extra period.
