Jimmies football falls 17-10 in tight loss at Hastings

Sep. 16—HASTINGS, Neb. — The University of Jamestown football team only turned the ball over twice, unfortunately for them, they proved to be costly in a 17-10 loss to Hastings College on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Broncos' Lloyd Wilson Field.

Early in the second quarter, the Jimmies' Ty Monson took a shot toward the end zone that was picked off, giving the Broncos the ball on a drive that would end in a field goal. The Broncos would kick a field goal to go up 10-7 on the ensuing drive. Late in the fourth quarter, trailing by a touchdown, the Jimmies lost a fumble on the Broncos' 15-yard line.

"You can't turn the ball over in the red zone, period," Jimmies head coach Brian Mistro said. "There's no ifs, ands or butts, no excuses, you can't turn the ball over in the red zone. So, I would say those are pretty big glaring things that happened in this football game."

Midway through the first quarter, the Jimmies' Caleb Ritter scooped up a loose ball and took it near midfield. The Jimmies offense took advantage of the turnover by driving down the field and punching it in to take a 7-0 lead.

The Broncos tied the game up in the second quarter and then had a chance to go up by a touchdown but were held to a field goal to go up 10-7 with 3:29 to go in the first half. The Jimmies responded with a field goal of their own to go into the half tied at 10.

The Jimmies' defense came up huge for a second time in the third quarter as they stuffed an Eli Nappe run from the one-yard line on fourth and goal. The Jimmies' defense shined in this one as they held the Broncos well under their season average for yards per game with 250 yards. They had one sack and forced one fumble.

The Broncos broke the tie just under two minutes into the fourth quarter when Nappe found Will Austin from 16-yards out to make it 17-10.

The Jimmies are back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, when they welcome in Doane University.
