Jimenez's return brings power boost to White Sox

Drew Silva notes how the impending return of Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez could bring a much-needed power surge to a squad that ranks in the bottom fifth in home run output.

DREW SILVA: Back at the tail end of spring training when White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez suffered a torn pectoral muscle while attempting to make a leaping catch at the wall in a Cactus League game, the thought was that his 2021 season was over before it could even get started. But Jimenez made far swifter than expected progress in his recovery from that injury and just moved his minor league rehab assignment to AAA Charlotte over the All-Star break, putting him a mere step away from joining the active roster on the South Side of Chicago.

Jimenez had a long home run during his short stay at high-A Winston-Salem and might be back to his old self sooner than anyone could have predicted in March. Through his first 177 Major League games between 2019 and 2020, the 24-year-old slugger put up 45 home runs and 120 RBIs. Again, that's a span of 177 games, just over a full season.

Eloy could offer a massive power boost to a White Sox team that currently holds a big lead on first place in the American League Central standings, despite ranking in the bottom fifth of all MLB clubs in total home run output.
