Jim Kaat apologizes for bizarre '40 acres' comment about Yoán Moncada during MLB playoff game

MLB Network went old-school with its broadcast for the American League Division Series between the Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros. That decision backfired in the first inning of Game 2.

The booth, consisting of Bob Costas as the announcer joined by Buck Showalter and Jim Kaat, discussed White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada as he stepped to the batter's box for his first at-bat of the game Friday. Showalter, the longtime MLB manager, commented on Moncada's physique.

"Get a 40-acre field full of 'em," Kaat, 82, said.

He apologized with a statement four innings later.

"Earlier in the game, when Yoán Moncada was at the plate, in an attempt to compliment the great player that he is, I used a poor choice of words that resulted in an insensitive and hurtful remark and I'm sorry for that," Kaat said.

Moncada struck out during the at-bat Kaat made the comment.

Kaat, who won 16 consecutive Gold Glove awards as a pitcher between 1962 and 1977, has been broadcasting since his playing days ended in the early 1980s. He won the 1982 World Series as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.
