Jim Furyk has had some of his best moments as a PGA Tour player in Canada.

He'll get the chance for more in 2024 when he serves as the U.S. Presidents Cup captain at the Royal Montreal Golf Club.

Furyk was announced by the Tour on Tuesday to guide the U.S. team against the International team Sept. 24-29, 2024. Canada native Mike Weir is the International captain.

Furyk, a Jacksonville resident and 17-time PGA Tour winner, was the U.S. Ryder Cup captain in 2018 and has been a Presidents Cup vice-captain twice, for Jay Haas in 2015 and Steve Stricker in 2017.

He was also a Ryder Cup vice-captain for Stricker in 2021 at Whistling Straits.

Furyk has won twice in Canada

Furyk won the Canadian Open twice, in 2006 and 2007, and finished second to Tim Clark in 2014 at Royal Montreal. In the 2007 Presidents Cup there, Furyk went 3-2 as the U.S. won 19.5-14.5.

"I've always enjoyed going to Canada and I've been treated very well by the fans up there," Furyk said. "The wins in Canada in 2006 and 2007 are among the highlights of my career ... right up there."

Furyk said Canadian golf fans are passionate about the sport.

"I think having a shorter season to play golf, perhaps five or six months, lends itself to throwing yourself at a sport when you do get the chance to play or go to a tournament," Furyk said. "They really immerse themselves in the game when the weather permits. There's a lot of golf tradition and history in Canada.”

Furyk has a 20-10-3 record as a Presidents Cup player and the teams he played on had a 5-1-1 record.

Canadians playing well

There's a lot of golf to play the rest of this season and into next year but Weir might have one of the best international teams ever and the backbone could be Canadians. There are five players from Canada currently among the top-50 on the FedEx Cup points list, Nick Taylor, Adam Svensson, Adam Hadwin, Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes. Svensson, Conners and Hughes have won this season.

"The last two Presidents Cups have been competitive and the last two we were on the road, in Australia [in 2019] we had to pull it out in singles," Furyk noted. "Having Mike Weir as a captain and getting a number of Canadians on their team is going to make them very tough to beat."

Furyk is the 10th U.S. captain, joining Davis Love III of St. Simons Island, Ga., (2022), Tiger Woods (2019), Stricker, Haas, Fred Couples (2013, 2011, 2009), Jack Nicklaus (2007, 2005, 2003, 1998), Ken Venturi (2000), Arnold Palmer (1996) and Hale Irwin (1994).

“Jim has been a role model and a tremendous ambassador for the PGA Tour during his remarkable career,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “And given the role he has played in the growth and success of the Presidents Cup over the last 25 years as both a competitor and a captain's assistant, it’s fitting he will bring his leadership skills to Montreal in 2024.”

Royal Montreal was formed in 1873 and is the oldest golf club in North America. It's celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

The championship "Blue Course" was designed by Dick Wilson in 1959 and re-designed by Rees Jones in 2004.
