What jersey numbers will UNC basketball players wear this season? Here are the Tar Heels

North Carolina basketball updated its roster for the 2023-24 season on Monday, officially signaling the start of a new year for the Tar Heels.

After missing the NCAA Tournament last season, UNC coach Hubert Davis saw seven players from that squad enter the transfer portal. Davis added five players from the portal and two freshmen, including guard Elliot Cadeau, to join returning starters Armando Bacot and RJ Davis.

Bacot (5) and Davis (4) will be rocking their same numbers as veterans, but two players will be wearing numbers that haven’t been donned in more than 70 years.

UNC basketball's Seth Trimble, Paxson Wojcik going back in time

Because of a change to NCAA rules, players will be allowed to wear Nos. 6, 7, 8 and 9 for the first time in decades. Sophomore guard Seth Trimble will switch from No. 0 to 7 and Brown transfer Paxson Wojcik will wear No. 8.

HUBERT'S THOUGHTS: How are UNC basketball’s new players, including Elliot Cadeau, fitting in with Tar Heels?

Trimble will be the first Tar Heel to wear No. 7 since Simon Terrell from 1948-50, according to UNC sports information director Steve Kirschner. Wojcik will be the first to don No. 8 since Dick Patterson wore that number in home games in the 1949-50 season.

Creighton Lebo and Rob Landry will wear the same numbers their fathers wore at UNC. Creighton’s dad, Jeff, wore No. 14 for Carolina in the 1980s and is a current assistant coach for the Tar Heels. Rob’s father, Pearce, wore No. 22 in the 1990s.

Elliot Cadeau rocking same Tar Heels' jersey as Raymond Felton, Joel Berry

Cadeau will follow in the footsteps of previous UNC point guards by rocking the No. 2 jersey. Raymond Felton and Joel Berry, a pair of national champions during their time at UNC, wore No. 2 and have their jerseys in the rafters of the Dean E. Smith Center.

Cadeau’s fellow newcomers include No. 1 Zayden High, No. 3 Cormac Ryan, No. 24 Jae’Lyn Withers, No. 32 James Okonkwo and No. 55 Harrison Ingram. Here's a look at the full roster.
