Jay Harbaugh still headed to the NFL, but not to where you think

Of all the Michigan football assistant coaches that have come and gone under former head coach Jim Harbaugh, only one was with the program for the full nine years — Harbaugh’s son, Jay Harbaugh.

The younger Harbaugh fulfilled myriad roles for the maize and blue, working first as the tight ends coach, then running backs, tight ends again, safeties, and concurrently served as the special teams coordinator with being a position-specific coach starting in 2020. A wealth of knowledge and a jack of all trades, it appeared that Jay Harbaugh would follow his father to the NFL this offseason.

It turns out that’s only half true.

Yes, Harbaugh has left for the NFL, but unlike the initial report which indicated he would follow Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers, it turns out he’s being hired by Mike Macdonald’s Seattle Seahawks as their special teams coordinator.

Of course, Jay Harbaugh and Macdonald coached together in Ann Arbor in 2021. While Harbaugh served under his father for the past nine seasons, previously, he had worked as a quality control assistant for John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens, after cutting his teeth as an assistant at Oregon State.
