Either the 76ers are pulling off some serious cap wizardry or Kyrie Irving distracted us from the fact that James Harden is actually the one taking a $30M pay cut. – 3:38 PM

What would James Harden opting-out mean to the 76ers?

Dave Early @DavidEarly
If Harden took a $10M discount in year one and let’s say $36.9M for ’23, the team could unlock a larger Mid-level exception AND a Bi-Annual exception, which it sounds like they’re targeting. But Harden could only (🤣) then earn about $120-3 yrs.

More on this storyline

Ky Carlin: If Philly is telling teams they’ll have the bi-annual exception as well in free agency, then it sounds like James Harden will definitely opt out and restructure his contract. That clears the way for P.J. Tucker. #Sixers -via Twitter @Ky_Carlin / June 29, 2022

Philadelphia continues to be mentioned as the leader to land Tucker on a widely-discussed deal that could reach as high as three years and $30 million. In addition to James Harden sacrificing some annual dollars, it’s believed the Sixers are still exploring various trade options to free financial flexibility, as well as upgrade their roster with premium veteran talent. The two teams most often mentioned as Matisse Thybulle suitors have been Portland and Dallas. -via Bleacher Report / June 29, 2022

Sources believe Harden will sign a two-year extension for less than the maximum after picking up that option. So if Harden opts in, the Sixers will have $151.7 million in salary tied up with 13 players. And this is where things get tricky. -via The Philadelphia Inquirer / June 29, 2022
