Postgame recap: Jacksonville Jaguars win exhibition opener at the Dallas Cowboys

The Jacksonville Jaguars are officially ready for some football.

The 2023 NFL preseason is here, and for the Jaguars, it begins with Saturday's trip to the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Eastern time.

Although it's exhibition football that doesn't count in the standings, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson has said that starters will see some action for the preseason opener. For Jags fans, that means the first chance to see quarterback Trevor Lawrence and teammates in game action since January's AFC divisional playoff against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jaguars depth chart: Here are our observations from the Jaguars' first unofficial depth chart

Calvin Ridley: Jaguars WR recognizes Tyson Campbell as a top corner

9:08 p.m. | Escape artist: Jaguars Nathan Rourke worked some magic on one play in victory over Cowboys

It won’t move Nathan Rourke up the Jacksonville Jaguars’ depth chart at quarterback and because it happened in the first preseason game, it’s possible that few people will remember it. But the play he made on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, was a nice moment for the Jags QB3 and showed the versatility and skills that caught the attention of a dozen NFL teams after Rourke, a native of Canada, set records in the CFL in 2022. | Read more --Garry Smits

8:29 p.m. | Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence, rookies stand out in preseason game vs. Cowboys. Here are our takeaways

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn't start the way they wanted to in the team's 28-23 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the first preseason game of the 2023 season. But they found a way to rebound. | Read more --Demetrius Harvey

8:17 p.m. | FINAL: Jaguars 28, Cowboys 23

The Jags win their preseason opener in Dallas. That's 1-0 for the exhibition schedule.

8:08 p.m. | Touchdown Cowboys: John Stephens Jr. scores for Dallas

This game isn't finished: Dallas takes advantage of a defensive breakdown for the touchdown to John Stephens Jr. That's a play the Jags will likely mark down as "needs improvement" in this week's review. They had backed the Cowboys behind the chains earlier in the series on a Ventrell Miller sack.

Jaguars 28, Cowboys 23, 2:16 4th.

8:06 p.m. | Who is Nathan Rourke? Learn more about the Jaguars' highlight-making quarterback

Fans are getting a look at Nathan Rourke tonight against the Cowboys, but he's been producing excitement long before he arrived on the First Coast. | Read more --Garry Smits

8:02 p.m. | Fumble: Handoff missed to Snoop Conner, Cowboys recover

This one isn't over yet. The handoff from Nathan Rourke to Snoop Conner squirted away into the line and the Cowboys recovered inside Jacksonville territory.

8:00 p.m. | Interception: Jaguars rookie Christian Braswell makes the pick

That's another takeaway for the Jacksonville defense. Christian Braswell is patient on that play and dives in front for the pick. Likely a game-clincher there.

7:56 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Nathan Rourke escapes pressure, finds Qadree Ollison for TD

Put that one on the highlight reel. Nathan Rourke continues to light up this football field, and his most recent feat is going to get some attention: He wiggled away from three Dallas defenders, then fired an off-balance pass into the end zone for Qadree Ollison for the touchdown. A remarkable feat just to avoid going down under that pressure. He's doing his best to make a push for a roster spot in this one.

Jaguars 28, Cowboys 16, 3:56 4th.

7:35 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Nathan Rourke leads drive to end zone

Nathan Rourke has produced some highlights since entering this game. The third-string QB from the CFL marched the Jags upfield, notably a downfield pass to receiver Elijah Cooks. Then, he rolled into the end zone from 4 yards out. A two-point conversion to Oliver Martin means it's a six-point edge for the Jaguars.

Jaguars 22, Cowboys 16, 8:53 4th.

7:24 p.m. | Touchdown Cowboys: Dallas, Deuce Vaughn move in front

The elusive Deuce Vaughn is into the end zone. Dallas has moved the ball more effectively against the Jaguars' reserves, and the sixth-rounder from Kansas State dances his way into the end zone from 5 yards out. The extra point was no good.

Cowboys 16, Jaguars 14, 13:49 4th.

7:20 p.m. | End of third quarter: Jaguars 14, Cowboys 10

Into the fourth quarter. Nathan Rourke is in at quarterback and backups are all over the field for both squads, as the battle for roster spots continues.

6:58 p.m. | Field goal Cowboys: Brandon Aubrey on target for Dallas

The Jaguars are still in front, but Dallas is closing the gap against the Jags' second and third units and exploiting several penalties. Former Oakleaf High School linebacker Shaq Quarterman helped keep the Cowboys out of the end zone with a third-down tackle for loss, leading to a 29-yard field goal by Dallas kicker Brandon Aubrey.

Jaguars 14, Cowboys 10, 8:34 3rd.

6:53 p.m. | Penalty wipes out Jaguars takeaway

One issue for the Jaguars today: penalties. A penalty on Christian Braswell wiped out what would have been an interception from rookie Divaad Wilson as the Jags and Cowboys begin the third quarter.

6:34 p.m. | HALFTIME: Jaguars 14, Cowboys 7

That's halftime. Run defense was a plus for the Jaguars, along with highlights from Jacob Harris, Tank Bigsby and Yasir Abdullah, while Trevor Lawrence settled down nicely after an early interception. Negatives included an injury to long snapper Ross Matiscik, some shaky moments on pass defense during the final Dallas drive of the quarter and trouble catching the football for receiver Kevin Austin.

6:32 p.m. | Touchdown Cowboys: Dallas, Jalen Tolbert get on board before halftime

The Jaguars have stopped Dallas from breaking through for much of this ballgame, but not that time. The Cowboys kept the drive moving inside the two-minute warning, including a fourth-and-1 conversion, before Will Grier found a wide-open Jalen Tolbert for a 17-yard touchdown. Looked like a possible miscommunication in pass coverage on that one.

Jaguars 14, Cowboys 7, 0:13 2nd.

6:02 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Tank Bigsby, Jacob Harris set up C.J. Beathard TD run

Two highlights on that drive for the Jaguars' offense. First, Tank Bigsby zoomed around the right end for a gain of 34. Then, 6-5 receiver Jacob Harris made a diving catch behind the Cowboys' defense at the Dallas 4. Harris eventually got up and ran to the end zone, but the officials ruled him down by contact after review. For Harris, in his third year, that's a valuable play in his quest to make the roster.

The drive ended with a C.J. Beathard bootleg score from 2 yards out. The Jags went for two again but didn't convert. Still, several rookies — Bigsby with his long run, Yasir Abdullah with a second-quarter sack — have stood out early.

Jaguars 14, Cowboys 0, 7:41 2nd.

5:45 p.m. | END OF FIRST QUARTER: Jaguars 8, Cowboys 0

Fifteen minutes in the books.

5:43 p.m. | Fumble: Gregory Junior chases back to strip Cowboys on 1, Daniel Thomas recovers

Gregory Junior is helping his chances of making this roster with a fumble forced and a fumble recovered in the opening quarter. Dallas was about to score when Junior and Shaq Quarterman combined on the strip at the Jacksonville 1, and safety Daniel Thomas recovered.

5:32 p.m. | That's all, folks (for Trevor Lawrence): Jaguars' QB to rest for remainder of day

That's going to do it for Trevor Lawrence. The quarterback's day is finished with one interception but also with a go-ahead TD pass to Christian Kirk. That means C.J. Beathard enters the game at this point. Not all starters are on the bench, though, with some regulars (particularly on the O-line) still in action.

5:25 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars! Trevor Lawrence connects with Christian Kirk on fourth down, first score of 2023 preseason

That's what Jags fans were hoping for. Starting with a short field, the Jaguars marched the ball inside the 10. Then, they went for fourth down, and Trevor Lawrence delivered a pass to Christian Kirk for the touchdown. It's a combination that fans have seen a lot during the past year-plus.

The Jags then went for two, and Lawrence lofted the ball to Zay Jones for a fine leaping grab in the back of the end zone. Is that the last sighting for the first-string offense in this one?

Jaguars 8, Cowboys 0, 4:40 1st.

5:21 p.m. | Fumble! Gregory Junior recovers for Jacksonville

The Jags and Cowboys have traded possessions and punts through the first part of the first quarter, but the Jaguars just picked up a highlight on special teams. On a punt return by Dallas, Jaguars long snapper Ross Matiscik stripped the ball loose and second-year cornerback Gregory Junior recovered the fumble.

5:09 p.m. | Trevor Lawrence throws a pick, Juanyeh Thomas intercepts for Cowboys

That's not quite what Jaguars fans had in mind. Trevor Lawrence throws into traffic down the left side and it's an interception by Cowboys DB Juanyeh Thomas. Not the kind of pass Jags fans will want to see their QB throwing in the regular season.

5:07 p.m. | Kickoff: Jaguars to receive

Preseason is now underway. The Jags take over from their own 25.

4:45 p.m. | Where's Jamal Agnew? Jaguars foes will be spending time asking themselves that very question

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ multi-skilled wide receiver and returner Jamal Agnew is one of only four players in NFL history to score touchdowns rushing, receiving, returning a kickoff and returning a field-goal attempt. Don't be too shocked if coach Doug Pederson figures out a way for Agnew to throw a TD pass one day. Maybe Agnew could go back to his college roots as a defensive back and add a pick-six to his bag of tricks. | Read more --Garry Smits

4:30 p.m. | ‘Confidence through the roof’: Kevin Austin's night and day progression for the Jaguars

There's buzz around the Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiver room as they roll toward their first preseason game. Not because they added a high caliber talent in Calvin Ridley. But because second-year undrafted free agent Kevin Austin has had a "night-and-day" transformation as he enters his second season with the team. | Read more --Juston Lewis

3:25 p.m. | 2023 schedule convenient for Jaguars to finally get off to fast start

Among the more distressing trends in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ history has been their notoriously slow starts. Not just in the first quarter of games, but the first quarter of the season.

Over the past 15 years, a record of 18-42 over the season’s first four games is the NFL benchmark of futility. The only teams with records nearly as bad are the Cleveland Browns (20-39-1) and Detroit Lions (21-38-1). The Gus Bradley years of 2013-16 were especially painful when the Jaguars combined for a measly two wins over the first quarter of the season.

Only once since 2008 have the Jaguars won at least three of their first four games, and that 3-1 start in 2018 was followed by a seven-game losing streak. But there’s potential good news on the horizon. | Read more --Gene Frenette
