Jaguars announce RB coach Bernie Parmalee firing, assistant OL coach Todd Washington let go

The coaching changes are continuing for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After letting go of defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and a majority of the defensive staff Monday night, the team announced running backs coach Bernie Parmalee was fired and the contract for assistant offensive line coach Todd Washington would not be renewed.

The team released a statement Tuesday to address all of the changes that were made to the coaching staff.

“Since our season’s end, I have made the difficult decision to relieve several members of the coaching staff — on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball — of their duties," head coach Doug Pederson said. "I want to thank each of these coaches for their tireless efforts these last two seasons. Ultimately, I felt change was necessary to allow our football team to reach the goals for which we are capable.”

Parmalee, a former player for the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, joined the team in 2021 as a member of Urban Meyers' staff, proceeding to coach undrafted free agent James Robinson to recording 989 yards from scrimmage in the 2021 season.

He helped Travis Etienne record consecutive seasons of more than 1,000 yards in his second and third season with Jacksonville's staff, helping elevate Etienne to the Jaguars' feature back after the former first-round pick suffered a Lisfranc injury and was forced to miss the duration of his rookie season.

But behind Etienne, Jacksonville's running backs saw a steep drop off. They haven't had a strong backup to him in the last two seasons despite spending capital in the draft and bringing in veteran players both years.

Washington was an eight-year NFL player who was a member of Super Bowl winning teams as a player (Tampa Bay-2005) and as a coach (Baltimore-2013) in his nearly two-decades of experience in the NFL.

Jacksonville's offensive line struggled to find consistency this season, starting nine different combinations of players throughout the season.
