A-J source: Texas Tech football defensive end Isaac Smith to miss season with knee injury
The Texas Tech football team is expected to be without one of its brightest young defensive players for the 2023 season.
Sophomore defensive end Isaac Smith is out for the year with a knee injury, a source told The Avalanche-Journal on Saturday. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.
Smith, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound edge player from Wagoner, Oklahoma, emerged during the final month of last season. He was expected to be part of a solid group of boundary ends with starter Steve Linton and Bryce Ramirez, the latter coming back from the leg injury he suffered last September.
Smith underwent hip surgery in February in Vail, Colorado, to repair a torn labrum and missed spring practice. He added more than 25 pounds during the off-season and returned for preseason camp in August.
Tech opened the season Saturday night at Wyoming. Smith did not travel with the team.
In the last three games last season — Tech victories against Iowa State, Oklahoma and Mississippi — Smith was credited with 11 tackles, including three tackles for loss and a sack. He started the last two of those games.
